Caleb's POV:
"Sorry Signa, but I'm off" I say, as Jaden walks past the two of us with a smug look on his face. She's flustered by him, of course.
I wave my hand in front of Sig's face to see If she was still with us.
"Uh.. okay.. You really sure you wanna miss out on my super secretive birthday party?" She smiles.
"I don't really know how secretive this is gonna be with every neighbor beside us. So gladly, I'm not taking part in this."
"Okay.. guess I'll clean the mess with my friends before Mom and Dad are here."
"Yeah.."
"Could you bring me some cheesecake on your way back? At least come here after Mom and Dad are home.."
"Yeah, Whatever."
I don't get Signa's thinking in throwing a party like this. Does she really think she can pull It off like in the movies? Mom and Dad leave for an hour and she's already invited half our neighborhood over.I let the wind take over as I open both front windows of the car. I felt like I could breathe again, even though I had already been breathing all this time.
Now I have to see where the fuck I should go alone. I'm not eager of staying home. I don't want to see Jaden, nor Camille, or my parents. It would be such a fucking disaster to have them all together.
I guess I'll just do what I'd do If I were with Brina right now, even though It's a bit different without her..
"Welcome to McDonald's, what would you like to order?"
"Two Big Macs. Both double coke and large fries."
"Anything else?"
After some wait, I get my burgers and fulfill myself with the only joy I'd get out of tonight.
I grabbed my phone and tried calling Steven as I finished the first burger and was on to the fries. I wanted to see If I could hang around and possibly give him something in return after what occurred last month, but no one answered. I rang his brother.
"Hey Griffin, It's Caleb. Your brother around? I was hoping to see him"
"Hey dude, not now. He'll be home in some hours, he's been working his ass off these days, but I don't know If his mood will be bright enough to see anyone."
"Could I leave you something for him, then?"
"Yeah, sure, call me when you're here. You remember the address, right?"
"Yeah, still got it." I hang up and bash more fries in my mouth before pulling reverse. I make a u-turn on the first exit and get on the highway.
The drive to Steven's was thirty minutes away. I hoped I could chill with him in the meantime, but I guess the boss wasn't home yet. Griffin could possibly be up to hanging, but I don't know what Steven's gonna think of that. He's pretty weird on letting his friends meet his family. That's why I never got to visit when his parents were home. I always got a strange sense from him.
I finally call up Griffin as I park the car out front, and see him open the backyard door to the right of the house. We fist bump.
"So, how's life been?" I ask, leaning back on my car.
"It's been okay, I guess. Yours?" He throws a cigarette he was smoking to the ground, and after he hadn't stepped on It, I stepped on It myself.
"Pretty shit" I breathe out.
"Woah, why so shit?" He laughs.
"I don't know man, It's like I feel empty all of a sudden."
"Don't tell me Steven beat your friend up for nothing. You did get it on with that girl after all, right?"
"Yeah, I don't know."
"Don't know why you do such random shit, Caleb. Weren't you happy with your girl?"
"Yeah, you know me, I always act before I think."
"Well, this time think before you act and get your girl back. She must want revenge after that shit broke loose."
"I don't know If she's like that but, here, give this to your bro. Don't think on taking It for yourself cause I'll be checking up." I hand him a black box that fit in one hand. Hope that's enough as payback.
"Ahh, what am I, a thief? That's what you think of me?" He laughs as I get back in the car.
"You never know, Griff." I laugh back.
He cusses me off with the middle finger and I do as well.
As I'm driving the thirty minutes back, I find a BJ's close from home. I didn't forget about the cake Signa asked for. I'm also getting a share of eating it, so I wasn't going to forget in any way. I parked the car pretty close to the entrance, taking my wallet and my phone.
Once I'm back, my phone starts ringing.
I pick up and get into the car. "Hi?" I say into the phone without reading the recipient.
"Hey Caleb, It's Cam. Look, I don't know what's-" I try to listen but I'm caught off guard when someone hits my car from the back.
"Hey, what the fuck?" I step out and try to focus on who was holding the wheel on the other one.
They lower the window. "Fuck, I'm so sorry, you piece of fucking shit."
Brina?
She moves the car backwards and drives off. I watch her with unease. How the hell did she know It was me.
"Caleb, are you even listening to me?" Cam screams into the phone.
"Huh?" I realize I still had Camille on the line.
"For fuck's sakes, Caleb! Something's happened to your sister. We told everybody to leave, we've called paramedics to your house-"Jaden's voice rings in my ear as I slowly get in the car. Brina, out of all places, was here?
"I'm on my way.." I hang up and try to delete the thought of her once more. Why was she here.
