Ellis catches me before my feet can even wish to touch the dirt. He holds me in his arms like I'm an oversized baby that must be rocked to sleep. If only that were the case... perhaps I wouldn't be so confused, "Thank you, but you know I could have landed on my own."
The demon butler begins to walk with soft steps, "Shall I allow you to walk the rest of the way?"
I sigh as I turn in his arms, resting my face in his chest, "That won't be necessary. You know where to go, I'll catch up on my sleep in the meantime."
A simple nod of his head shoes he understands, "Sleep well." The rhythm of his steady footsteps eases me into a deep slumber.
Elllis and I arrive at my manor far before the carriage. This provides some private time for me as my ever-loyal butler excused himself to prep an appetizer and supper for our guests.
I look down at my paper and quill, more refreshed thanks to my nap with Ellis. I barely have anything scribbled down as I attempt to collect my thoughts. Rejecting Alois earlier was a bit cruel, even if he deserved it.
Lately, it feels like I've been pushing him further and further away when I want to pull him close. Perhaps these are the hormones that I've read about in the new medical papers. Are hormones supposed to make one do the opposite of what they wish?
My mind begins to fall down the rabbit hole. The ink pooling at the tip of my quill manages to remove me from my daze. "This isn't working," I mumble. "I'll just have to speak to him privately." With a fresh sheet of paper, I quickly write a small note in thin elegant cursive.
Dear Alois,
I'm very confused right now, about things I can't ask my green-eyed companion. Please forgive me. I can't bring myself to admit more right now. Please, let's meet at our special spot tonight, normal time. I'll be waiting.
Forever yours,
YN
I glance over the note. It's more desperate then I like to come off as, but it will have to do. I fold the parchment and lightly spray my finest perfume onto it before sealing it in a small envelope with a kiss. I slip the bundle into my corset for safekeeping.
A chill runs up my back. Quickly, I remove my dagger. "Who is there?" I demand, removing my body from my seat to get ready to protect myself. Silence remains in the master bedroom. I trace the room with my eyes, every last nook and cranny. Nothing. Nothing is there. But that can't be right.
I keep up my guard as I slam my foot down against the hardwood floor. "Ellis!" I demand at the top of my lungs. Within seconds the man appears before me, bowing respectfully. "You called, m'lady."
"Stay with me," I order simply as I walk over to my large bed. "I think there was an intruder and I don't want to be alone right now." My face plummets into the soft fabric causing my next words to be muffled. "Just stay with me until I fall asleep."
"As you wish, YN."
