"I need you to investigate this doctor. Monitor his patients and their prescriptions. I believe that will give us the key." I begin speaking to Ciel as soon as I step into the door.
"Good morning to you as well." He sips his tea and waves me in. "Hand your notes to me."
I do as I take a seat. It feels like ages when I finally hear him speak again. And when he did speak, his voice is barely a whisper. "It's almost funny," Ciel says.
"Young Master?" Sebastian ask, with an eyebrow raised.
"What is it?" I ask.
"To be compared to mutton. The physician's practice is called 'Lamb of God,' for instance. A congregation is a 'flock', on Judgement Day the sheep will be divided from the goats, and so on. It's almost funny, considering," Ciel says with an ugly smile. "Considering most of those involved will be slaughtered like farm animals.
"I knew I'd come in to something interesting" Alois enters quickly, sits beside me and tosses an arm over me. The smile sharpened--and Sebastian knew he'd missed the mark somewhat.
"Speaking of the flock," Ciel said. "the ancient Hebrews offered animal sacrifices to the Lord. I think I've thought of a good sacrificial lamb." Ciel looks evilly at Alois. "Someone needs to test this theory. And I vote Alois."
"I have no problem with it." I shrug.
"Rude! Both of you! I haven't the slightest clue what is being discussed but suddenly I'm a sacrifice? No way!" Alois mocks being offended. He truly does not care.
"I see your point, Alois," I say with a slight smile. "Most people would still prefer to be the shepherd to the lamb."
"I'm not keeping up with this analogy!" Alois complains.
"I suppose next time," Ciel speaks, and in a completely different tone finishes with, "you will be on time." Alois groans. "Sick with syphilis. That's what you'll be. Tell the doctor that you're in need of alternative treatment as the others are not helping as quickly as you'd like." I giggle at the thought and Alois slips his hand to my hip. I can feel the tips of his fingers pressing into me.
"And a letter for you, Young Master," Sebastian slips in the room, slipping the letter and its wax seal under the teapot before he retires to his place, standing just behind Ciel's chair.
Ciel's lips compress slightly when he sees it, tilting his head at the letter. I watch him school his face to impassivity– always fascinating how someone so young could have such incredible control over themselves. I have no illusions; I know that Ciel's perfect containment of his emotions only lasts long enough for someone to press just the right trigger, and I can only hope it won't be Alois.
The young earl's eye scan over the paper, tapping his finger on the table, his signet ring clicking against the wood. He doesn't seem to like it, and I feel a soft curl of anticipation, wondering what it is.
"It seems the outbreak has doubled. We must get a move on. Alois, be ready in two hours." He stands, along with myself and Alois. "Sebastian, let us go eliminate these poor creatures."
