"It seems there is one particularly sinister ingredient in this mix, one we have long known to stay away from." Ciel's voice rings out in the silent office. "Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, there seems to be no demonic forces at play in this case, only faulty science."
Each butler stands beside their respective master; Claude with Alois, Sebastian with Ciel and Ellis with me. Of course, I assumed the butlers likely knew this already, but they were sneaky enough not to say a word until it was necessary. Ellis was already especially vexed with my behavior as of late, whereas Claude seemed to be absolutely thrilled to have a somewhat less trying master-- one who would perhaps keep their buttons buttoned. He failed to take into account however, that Alois would certainly be doing all of the unbuttoning between us both.
"For some God-forsaken reason, this 'doctor' decided to use the fluid within a cow's brain to treat his patients. And this has given us--"
"Mad cow disease!" Alois jumps up and throws his hands up in the air. "Oh, how interesting! I saw this in the Trancy estate before I was Alois! I never would have thought it was the same thing. Is there a cure?"
"No... unfortunately... not." Ciel loses some of his gusto and sits down. "I've reported the physician and provided all the evidence necessary. We just... we don't know enough about the disease. We only know some of the symptoms. Inability to coordinate their movements, personality changes, inability to sleep or even to speak normally. They lose themselves slowly but inevitably. Everything that we think of as a zombie."
And he was right. It would take almost one hundred and thirty years until more was known. Only the butlers would be alive to know that 'Mad Cow Disease' was a rare disease variant of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease. It was a prion disease, which meant that the very proteins within an organism had mutated and gotten a life of their own-- they worked to influence the other proteins in the body to misfold and stop working; as if they were a virus or bacteria. What was more frightening about this was that the proteins could be passed from person to person and one would almost never know until it was too late. And there was still no cure.
I didn't know any of that, however, and truth be told, I am happy not to. For my life, I only had to focus on a few things. The most important of all being my upcoming nuptials to an absolutely bonkers lad. I don't know what I am getting myself into.
AN: And the end! I know if I make this go any longer, we'll fall back into a year without updates so with the end of this arc, I bid this book adieu! Thanks again to for the beginning of the book and sorry it took so long for me to finish!!
