"I don't know why I should have to come to your doctor's appointment." I complain effortlessly. It's to distract myself from my current feelings surrounding my circumstances."How do you get into these situations?"

It's still early morning, cold and honestly, a bit smelly. We are somewhere in a dark alley, everything black and red around us . Not a new situation – but unusual enough (always something strange and beyond the normal realm) that I felt a bit uncomfortable in my role.

"I found him out, didn't I?" Alois clipped back. "Without me, we would still be wandering around slummy London."

"True." Though whether it was really necessary for Alois to do it... It didn't matter. My mind was quite occupied at this issue at hand, and at the previous issue. The fear is as delicious as it always is, of course, but it was the fascination with me that caused this thought to spin its way through Alois' mind more and more often as he and I grew older. He wants to get married and there is little I can do about it. And that doesn't bother me. At least, not as much as it used to.

My thoughts are interrupted with the creak of the hinges in front of me.

"Ah, hello, madam, sir." A middle-aged man pops into the door. "My nurse tells me that you're having a bit of trouble... down there. Luckily enough, I have a most effective cure!"

"Don't you need to... check?" Alois asks, raising a brow. "The usual shot did not help..."

"With a lady in the room? Improper and unnecessary." He nods and repeats the last phrase again before opening a cabinet. He takes a small, yellow vial out from the back of the wooden receptacle-- this is what I wanted in the first place. I had previously noted that all of this doctor's venereal disease patients were now the effected-persons.

Alois makes small talk with the doctor as I spin the vial around. Soon enough, I find myself asking what it is and am rewarded with an awkward stare. I realize that this is a strange thing for a woman to inquire, so I stumble through some silly reasons why I might want to know. The suspicion abates and we are eventually left to our devices. It was all much easier than I thought it might be.

However, the walk back to the arranged meeting place is not going as easily. I feel Alois eyeing me and I vehemently keep my eyes straight ahead. But I know this will not stop him.

"Do you know what I'm going to say?" Alois' deep voice caresses my ear, though I know he doesn't mean for it to do so. I shiver, but shake my head. It is best to play ignorant in most situations; this one included. The intended street is in sight and I know if I can just make it into sight that Ellis will put the whole conversation to rest. Alois' hand stops me however, and I know that I can no longer escape.
