Let's learn to introduce ourselves.

Hello!     Hallo!

I am Ana.     Ich heiße Ana.

I am from Spain.     Ich komme aus Spanien.

I am learning German.     Ich lerne Deutsch.

Few things to note here would be:

· German in German is Deutsch and Germany is Deutschland.

· Nouns are always Capitalized.

· The German alphabet contains a unique character, the letter "ß". It is pronounced in a similar way to the letter "S" in English.

Let's have a look at a Conversation.

Conversation 1:

Ana: Hallo!

Peter: Hallo!

Anna: Ich heiße Ana und du.

Peter: Ich heiße Peter.

Ana: Ich lerne Deutsch und du?

Peter: Ich lerne auch Deutsch.

Anna: Toll! Bis später. Tschüss.

Peter: Tschüss.

Translation:

Ana: Hello!

Peter: Hello!

Ana: My name is Ana and you.

Peter: My name is Peter.

Ana: I am learning German and you?

Peter: I also learn German.

Anna: Great! See you later. Bye.

Peter: Bye.

This would be an Informal conversation. To address someone formally we should use Sie. Sie is always capitalized even in the middle of a sentence. Also, the verb form will also change.

We can also use Guten Tag instead of Hallo. It means 'good day'. However, it is used for formal conversations. Also, we could replace Tschüss to Auf wiedersehen which means 'Goodbye' and used formally.

Here we have our formal conversation.

Conversation 2:

Ana: Guten Tag!

Peter: Guten Tag!

Anna: Ich heiße Ana. Und Sie.

Peter: Ich heiße Peter.

Ana: Ich lerne Deutsch. Und Sie?

Peter: Ich lerne auch Deutsch.

Anna: Toll! Bis später. Auf wiedersehen.

Peter: Auf wiedersehen.

Also notice we used the words komme, kommen and kommst. These all are different forms of verb kommen which means 'to come'. In German, verb changes its form based on tense (present, past, future), gender (masculine, feminine), person (first person, second person, third person), and singular or plural. We will come back to it later.

Also notice in Danke schön! and Bis später we had ö and ä. They are called umlaut. We will discuss it in the next lessons.

That's it for this lesson. Bis später.

I have tried my best to avoid any mistakes. However, if there are still any errors in there, please do let me know through comments. Also, please do give your feedback.

Thank you very much. Danke schön!
