As you must have already observed in previous chapters, nouns were preceded by der, die, or das. These are definite articles or bestimmter Artikel.
There are two types of articles in german bestimmter Artikel (definite article, the) and unbestimmter Artikel (indefinite article, a or an). They differ according to the gender and number of the noun.
bestimmter Artikel
1. Männlich (Masculine) der
2. Weiblich (Feminine) die
3. Neutrum (Neuter) das
So, all German nouns, regardless of gender, become die in the nominative and accusative case plurals. (We will learn about the German cases and their plural forms in later chapters.) So a noun such as das Fenster(window) becomes die Fenster(windows), Das Auto(car) becomes die Autos(cars).
unbestimmter Artikel
1. Männlich ein
2. Weiblich eine
3. Neutrum ein
Let's have a look at a few examples:
The woman is tired.
Die Frau ist müde.
A woman is drinking water.
Eine Frau trinkt Wasser.
The women are drinking water.
Die Frauen trinken Wasser.
To practice you can start by forming a few simple sentences and later change there nouns or numbers or both. For example, we can replace die Frau with der Mann (man) or das Mädchen (girl) and so on.
I am going to keep these chapters small so as to make them in small modules for your easy understanding. Keep practicing and bis später. Tschüß.
