Questions can be of two types based on how you answer them either 'Yes or No' or 'W-Fragen'. In this chapter, we will do Yes/No Questions.

Yes/No Questions

When asking a yes/no question in English, you would say: "Is it cold?", "Do you have a dog?" or "Does the man drink water?".

German will not use "do" here. A sentence in German has the following structure:

Subject+Verb+Object.

However, to form a Question we simply need to change places of verb and subject. Thus making the new structure as:

Verb+Subject+Object.

Thus the statement 'Es ist kalt.' becomes 'Ist es kalt?'. Similarly:

Du hast einen Hund. becomes  Hast du einen Hund?

Der Mann trinkt Wasser.  becomes Trinkt der Mann Wasser?

Let's try making some more Yes/No questions.

I am hungry. / Are you hungry?

Ich bin hungrig. / Bist du hungrig?

That woman in the red dress is my mom.

Diese Frau im roten Kleid ist meine Mutter.

Is that woman in the red dress your mom?

Ist diese Frau im roten Kleid deine Mutter?

I want some orange juice.

Ich möchte etwas Orangensaft.

Do you want some juice?

Möchtest du etwas Saft?

Try making lots of Questions of some basic sentences. We will come back to negating sentences in a separate chapter. In the next chapter, we will cover W-Fragen.

For now, keep practicing. Stay safe. Bis später, tschüss.
