Welcome to the second chapter of Numbers. here we will learn numbers from 21 onwards.

In German, to say "in the twenties," short for the 1920s, you say in den zwanziger Jahren. In English, we write 21 as twenty-one however in German it would be written as einundzwanzig, as a single word. This means one and twenty.

21                 twenty-one       einundzwanzig    ein+und+zwanzig

22                 zweiundzwanzig

23                 dreiundzwanzig

24                  vierundzwanzig

25                  fünfundzwanzig

26                  sechsundzwanzig

27                 siebenundzwanzig

28                 achtundzwanzig

29                  neunundzwanzig

30                  dreißig   (Note that unlike the other tens, dreißig has no "z" in its spelling.)

31                  einunddreißig

Similarly, the numbers will be consistent with the system from the 20s.

40                    vierzig

50                    fünfzig

60                    sechzig

70                    siebzig

80                    achtzig

90                    neunzig

100                  hundert or einhundert

100th(hundredth)   der hundertste not der hunderte like der achte.

1/100(one-hundredth or one out of one hundred) is ein hundertstel and not ein hundertel.

101                  hunderteins

101st             der hunderterste, der 101.

102                  hundertzwei

200                   zweihundert

200th               der zweihundertste, der 200.

In German, one thousand is written or printed as either 1000, 1.000, or 1 000, using a decimal point 'Punkt' or a space instead of a comma. This also applies to all German numbers above 1,000.

1000                 tausend or eintausend

1000th             tausendstel

1001                 tausendeins

2000                 zweitausend

2002                 zweitausendzwei

9999                neuntausendneunhundertneunundneunzig that is nine-thousand-nine-hundred-ninety-nine.

This is neuntausend neunhundert neunundneunzig, 9000+900+99

Talking About Jahre ("Years")

For the years 1100 to 1999 in German, we say the hundert rather than the tausend, as for 1152 (elfhundertzweiundfünfzig) or 1864 (achtzehnhundertvierundsechzig).

1100               elfhundert (year, number)tausendeinhundert (number only)

2000               zweitausend (year, number)

"In the year 2001" can be spoken or written in German as im Jahre 2001 or im Jahr 2001 (zweitausendeins). If the word Jahr is left out, then the year is used by itself, with no im ("in the"). For example:

He was born in (the year) 2001.

Er ist im Jahre 2001 geboren. / Er ist 2001 geboren.

10,000 and Up

10,000            zehntausend 10.000

20,000            zwanzigtausend  20.000

100,000          hunderttausend

1,000,000(million)      (eine) Million

2,000,000                         zwei Millionen.  (Note the space between zwei and Millionen also Millionen is in caps.)

1,000,000,000(billion)    (eine) Milliarde

1,000,000,000,000(trillion)      (eine) Billion

Let's practice making some sentences:

Who wants to win a million dollars?

Wer will eine Million Dollar gewinnen?

My father is 62 (sixty-two) years old.

Mein Vater ist 62 (zweiundsechzig) Jahre alt.

He was born in year 1958 (nineteen fifty-eight).

Er wurde im Jahr 1958 geboren (neunzehnhundertachtundfünfzig).

Peter got 78% (seventy-eight percent) score.

Peter erhielt 78% (achtundsiebzig Prozent).

For now keep practicing. Stay safe. Bis später. Tschüß.
