HOW IT STARTED
the room was silent apart from the rain on my windowsill and the blank sketch sheet that i had been folding for a paper boat for my little brother.
i watched from my bed as georgie drew a happy face on the fogged bedroom window with his small infant finger. he huffed and turned back to me, the doodle on the glass beginning to fade.
"you sure we won't get in trouble, bill?" he asked worriedly. i scoffed and smirked, shaking my head 'no'.
"don't be a w - wuh - wuss. i'd come with you if i weren't," i fake coughed twice, covering my mouth with my fist. "dying." i added with a raspy voice.
georgie groaned. "you're not dying!" he said with a whiny tone. i jolted my head up from resting on my head board and pointed to my trash bin with tissues overflowing it.
"you didn't see the v - vuh - vomit coming out of my nose this morning?" i questioned him, chuckling.
georgie cringed. "that's disgusting." he snarled.
i shook my head and smirked. "okay, go get the wax." i instructed georgie. he looked out the door, then returned his glance to me.
georgie raised one eyebrow. "in the cellar?" asked for confirmation as if i were crazy.
"you want it to f - fluh - float, don't you?" i asked him, getting up to place the boat onto the surface of my desk.
georgie huffed. "fine." he sighed, exiting my bedroom and to the cellar. i stared out the window, my mother's piano filling my ears.
something, someone caught my eye. a girl with brown hair that just went below her shoulders. she was wearing an odd, retro looking brown jacket and holding a clear umbrella above her head.
she seemed to be taking a stroll. she looked new. bill knew everyone in his neighborhood. the girl was anonymous to his knowledge.
she was probably finding her way around. i had eventually noticed how long i had been observing the girl, and came to the conclusion that georgie was dawdling.
i picked up my walkie talkie and held down a button, letting the little red light switch on, telling me to talk into the speakers. "hurry up." i told him.
a while later, georgie came rushing back through my doorframe with the box of gulf wax. he handed it to me and i went down to the kitchen to melt it in a bowl.
when i came back up, i took the lid off my sharpie and wrote S.S Georgie on the boat before painting the melted wax in layers onto it.
after it quickly dried, i held it up. "alright, there you go." i place it in georgie's hands with a warm smile. "sh - she's all ready captain."
georgie squints. "she?" he asks, confused.
"you're supposed to call b - buh - boats she." i explain.
georgie admires the folded paper. he looked up at me with joy sparkling in his eyes. "she. thanks, billy!" he said, hugging me tightly.
i pulled away and we laughed. "see ya later," georgie began to exit my room. "bye!" was the last he said to me before heading down to put his rain gear on.
i closed the box of gulf wax and stood up to watch georgie leave the driveway. he turned and looked up to me at my windowsill, and he smiled and waved excitedly.
i held the walkie talkie up to my mouth. "be careful." i told him. georgie nodded and ran off to chase his boat.
i never saw him later.
