Derek's POV
"That's basically it.." trails off Harper.
She had just told me everything. How she was kidnapped by Klaus, what her parents are and why she moved here in the first place.I know I need to tell her but I can see the fear in her eyes. I know this could push her off the edge. I can't lose her and I know it's selfish but I can't.
So this is how I reply, "I never knew vampires were real."
The truth is I didn't and now it makes sense how Damon doesn't have a heartbeat. How he knows and why he's looking at me questioningly. I shake my head and shrug as I look at him to try and in force that I didn't.
"Yeah well neither did I. You have to stay here, Damon's the only one who can get in here. You have nowhere else to go anyways. Do you?" Harper asks, her eyes big.
"No, so thanks. Um how can Damon be the only one who can get in here?" I ask.
"Vampires need to be invited in and her mother made the mistake of inviting me in but no other vampires in the town have had that luxury. Though I must say if Klaus wants to get to you he has his ways. Last time he couldn't get to me he started throwing fence posts at me in hopes of staking me." Answers Damon, he has this weird thing where he says something serious but it's like it doesn't effect him. Maybe he has witnessed too much of what life is really like.
"Right, so we just have to trust that Damon doesn't turn on us?" I question, scowling at Harper.
"Exactly." Smirks Damon.
About two hours later I was sitting in Harper's living room while she was stuck talking to her mother.
"Yes it's fine he can stay, tell me again how you met him?" I hear Harper's mum ask in a harsh whisper while I sit in the room next door.
"I met him in Beacon Hills. He was a senior when I started, early graduation. The only person I really got along with, he helped me with maths." Harper replies, so it wasn't the truth I was a few years older then she made me out to be.
"Ok fine but he sleeps on the couch and he can stay here all day if he must but I don't want him in my way." I hear her mum answer.
"Of course.." Harper says but I hear her trail off as her mother walks off. Even I've noticed her mum has been distant lately, like she doesn't care about her as much as I would've thought.
"You're allowed to stay. Couch though I'm afraid." She says coming in to sit next to me in the family room.
"I can sleep on dirt so really that's fine." I laugh, though it's half hearted.
Harper still had to go to school in the morning meaning I was left with her parents not that they stayed long. Her mum disappeared down to the street and her dad said to stay out of his way while he's working in the garage. I said to him that's fine I was just going to sit upstairs anyway.
I couldn't do it, stay cooped up in her bedroom. Too many of her smells. I had to get out of there, I was going crazy and by the look of it, lunch was about to start. So I got up and walked to the school by following all the horrible teen smells.
Harper's POV
Unfortunately being at risk of being killed by vampires doesn't get me out of school. So I've had to leave Derek at home but he didn't seem fazed. I haven't really seen him do much else but sit around anyway.
Walking into this school feels weird. I know people now. More I know the vampires and who knows about them.
I have history before lunch which isn't too bad. I can't really complain, some things are actually interesting in history. There's also the fact that we have a really cool teacher. I don't know much about him but he seems like a good guy. Someone I can trust. There's not many people around here like that.
"Alright today we are learning about the attack on Pearl Harbor on the 6th of December 1941." States Mr. Saltzman.
"Uh it was the 7th." I hear from the back.
The whole class goes 'ooooh' as Mr. Saltzman smirks.
"Thought you would pick up on that." Laughs Mr. Saltzman.
"What can I say I like dates." Smirks, who I recognise to be Stefan.
The class ends and I go to quickly walk out of class but get stopped by Mr. Saltzman.
He waits for the whole class to leave before he talks to me.
"I just want to say that you aren't in trouble. I just want to make sure your having an ok time moving in." He starts, "Are you dating Matt?"
"Yeah.." I answer hesitantly. It wasn't odd for him to ask this and as I answered I smirked. He knew a lot of gossip.
"He's a good guy. What about friends have you made any?" He asks.
"Uhh.. I seem to be doing better at making enemies. Can I go?" I ask grabbing at my bag strap.
"What do you mean enemies, you seem like a smart young girl? How about Stefan?" He smiles.
"Ahhh I don't think so."
"Why not?"
"We didn't start off on the right foot."
"Why not?"
"Why do you care so much?" The amount of questions about Stefan gave me a bad feeling. You know how I said I felt like I could trust him, that was before there was a possibility he could know about vampires. I just couldn't deal with that now.
"Uhh.. I don't." He stutters and I quickly dash out the door.
"Omg Harper!" I hear a girl and almost get tackled in the hallway.
I look at her bright red hair and smile immediately, "Anna! What are you doing here?"
"Exchange program. What about you?"
"Moved again a month and a bit back."
"Wow we have so much to talk about!" She links her arm with mine and off we walk but I look behind me and see Mr. Saltzman and Stefan talking and looking at me. Their gaze made me unsettled. What did they know that I didn't?
