Chapter 13

Harper's POV

Walking into lunch was different today. I had a friend who wasn't Matt. Not that I sat with him much. He had his own friends and I didn't really want to get to know them. Besides, who would I be to get in the middle of that? All I knew was they could kill me.

We turned the corner into the cafeteria and I felt two arms snake around my waist, pulling me into a back hug. I wasn't scared as I instantly knew they belonged to Matt.

I immediately smiled like a fool and felt safe. Not wasting anymore time, I turned my head and he presses his lips against mine gently. He really was the sweetest boyfriend and he knew better then to attempt to make me sit with his friends. So I continued to smile as he squeezed my hand and grinned at me before walking off to join his friends for lunch.

"So what was it like living in California? Lots of good looking guys laying on the beach just begging for you?" Anna laughs as we sit down, winking as if to imply that's how I got Matt.

"Yeah no not exactly." I chuckle softly. "More like a whole bunch of normal high school kids who had their friends and didn't need any more. Don't get me wrong there was some nice guys like Stiles, he would talk to me and hangout a bit and Lydia...you would have loved her, she smiled at me and always said hi. But I didn't fit in there, small town everyone knows everyone and that's it."

"True, so no guys lying around on the beach shirtless?" She smirks and winks at us.

"Well first up we weren't near a beach, we were near the woods. I mean Derek, who's actually here now, I got along with him he was a weirdo still is but he would walk around the woods shirtless." I laugh, eating with Anna.

"I mean if he has abs then fair enough, I'd walk around showing mine off to the whole world if I had the privilege of owning any."

"True true." I say as we both lose it. I hadn't felt this good for ages.

"So he's hot right, you didn't deny any abs. Oooh how old is he? All the goss!"

"What do you want me to say? I have a boyfriend! But I mean yeah he's pretty good on the eye and he has abs but he's a friend. And as for age too old!" I laugh looking around to the table Matt is sitting on to see Caroline looking me up and down. Damn I forget they can hear everything but it's not like I said anything bad I'm just joking with my friend.

We keep talking till Stefan interrupts us, "I believe we got off on the wrong foot, my brother is a bit tough to swallow."

"Oh yeah, who's your brother? I'm Anna by the way." Says Anna smiling putting her hand out for him to shake.

"My brother would be Damon, I'm Stefan." He replies.

"Salvatore?" She asks, he answers with a short nod.

"We didn't start on the wrong foot. I just don't think we can be friends." I say picking up my stuff, having finished my lunch.

"Why not? You're friends with my brother." Stefan says him and Anna following me to the bin.

"I'm not friends with your brother. He's just very...persistent." I frown shoving my leftovers into the bin.

"Ok but you're friends with Derek." He says frowning at me.

"Yes and.?" I pause looking at him to respond.

"Uh doesn't matter..." he says trailing off. God what is it with people in this town asking so many questions then just stopping like they're trying to figure you out stuff?

I walk off with Anna in toe. We walk outside and go to sit on the lawn only to find a scowling face looking at us.

"Oh my god.." I breathe.

"What? God who is that? He's kinda hot and he's looking right at us!" Asks Anna nudging me.

"That, is Derek." I breathe out.

"No way! Hey Derek!" She shouts running over. Only for him to do his signature eyebrow raise.

"So what are you doing here at a high school that you don't go to because you have already graduated years ago?" She asks smirking and looking over at me.

"Who are you?" He asks simply looking at her.

"Harper's best friend, now answer my question."

"Had to get out of the house and Harper is the only person I know in this town." He replies sharply.

"He really doesn't smile does he." Says Anna in a mock sad voice looking over at me.

"You should be at home what are you doing here of all places?" I ask in a harsh voice pushing Derek and I away from Anna.

"I just said, I was bored." Replies Derek .

"Derek it's not safe you know that and here. School is definitely not safe, half the students are dead." I sigh.

"Fine I'll go home but I'm going for a run first." He frowns before turning and leaving.

"What was that about?" Asks Matt as he walks over and puts his arm around me.

"Derek is staying at my place and got bored so he came to talk to me." I say turning around.

"What can't he wait a few more hours," Smiles Matt. "And who's this?"

"Right this is Anna," I smile.

"Her best friend all the way from Australia." Anna says shaking Matt's hand. "You must be Matt."

"Yeah, nice to meet you. I was just wondering if I could steel Harper for a minute." He says smiling.

"Aww but you already stole her heart." Laughs Anna.

"Shut up," I laugh walking off with Matt.

"I was wondering if you wanted to go have dinner tomorrow night." Smiles Matt.

I really want to say yes but I don't think I can, "um I'm not sure... I want to but I think I have to stay at home. Mum's not to happy with me." I say as confidently as I can.

"You don't seem so convincing, are you sure you can't?" He says frowning at me.

"Yeah I can't I'm sorry." He doesn't even hug me as the bell goes he just nods and walks off.

Anna joins me at my side, "what's his problem?"

"Not sure," I say hesitantly looking over only to see Caroline walking off towards Mr. Saltzman with Matt.
Seriously, what is going on with this school?
