Men are liars. We'll lie about lying if we have to. I'm an algebra liar. I figure two good lies make a positive. ~Tim Allen
Michael's POV
"So, Luke," I said to the blonde boy next to me. I asked if Luke would run over to the gas-station store with me so I could grab a drink. He aggreed after a little push from Calum. "You seem like you're an awful ways away from home without your mother. Why is that? Like, why here?"
"I.." Luke trailed off. "I don't know." At this point I figured I was probably getting suspicious because I was literally picking apart Luke's story piece by piece. So I figured to let it rest.
"Well, I feel like I've asked you a lot of questions." I said. "You don't have any questions for me?"
"What do you do for work?" Luke asked.
"I'm uh..A photographer." I said. "I take pictures of all the pretty places."
"Oh, well where's your camera?" Luke asked.
"It needed to be fixed so I brought it into town." I nodded my head slowly and Luke gave a smile whilst shaking his head. "What?"
"I know your lying. You're kinda..Awful at it." Luke laughed lightly. "And I probably shouldn't trust you, I should just leave now. Am I right?"
"Maybe."
"But then again, I can't find the willpower to do it. Odd, I don't understand. Maybe it's because Calum and Ashton seem to-to get along really well. And I always feel like I bother Calum, so he needs a little time to himself and his other friends." Luke laughed nervously.
"You really think you bother Calum?" I asked while Luke gave a sheepish nod. "Why do you think that?"
"I don't have any friends, so Calum always spends all his time with me. He must get sick of it." Luke shrugged and I felt a pang of guilt and maybe even pity for the the boy.
"I doubt it." I gave a reassuring smile.
Luke smiled. "Thanks but I don't."
"Oh. Look. It's you." The cashier scoffed when he saw Luke, Luke ducked his head and shuffled behind me slightly.
"What are you.." I mumbled but remembered what several people said about Luke standing behind people when he got nervous or scared.
"It's okay." I smiled at Luke. "Hello sir,"
"Ah! De - "
"I would like to purchase this!" I said loudly, cutting the gentleman off. He picked up on the cut off and simply scanned the item.
"Oh and blondie, you should learn to live on your own instead of the backs of others." The cashier said to the blonde as Luke's face flushed a pure red color.
"And you sir need to be more polite to your customers or you won't have any." I snapped.
"I'll treat them however I please." The man scoffed.
"Fine." I snarled. "Come on, Luke."
"O-Okay." Luke stuttered as I pulled him out of the store.
"I'm sorry for making you come with me." I sighed.
"It's okay, you didn't know this would happen." Luke gave a small smile.
"So Luke," I said. "Tell me about yourself. Your home life."
"Well, I always grew up in a small town." Luke said. "I lived with my two brothers and my mother. Calum and I we," Luke laughed lightly. "We play a lot of pranks on people, harmless pranks. Why the worst we ever did was -" Luke stopped short. "We accidentally broke Mrs. Haringrath's window. But she's a kind old woman so she didn't get mad at us."
Everything was right there front of me. I could arrest Luke right now, there was no doubt about it. But, even if my handcuffs were on me I don't think I could even pull them out.
Luke couldn't have done this, I keep telling myself, a few days ago I was so sure that I could. But now..I just don't see it.
"Michael, what was your childhood like?" Luke asked with a smile. "Tell me about you."
"Well I wasn't actually born in Nevada."
"You are quite the liar, Michael." Luke smirked.
"I just wanted to share something in common with you." I shrugged. "No I was born New York and I lived in the city with my mother. We had a really run down apartment. So I studied hard and went into - " I stopped in my tracks. "In photography.."
"Still trying to keep that lie?" Luke laughed. "Seriously Michael, what's your job?"
"I don't have one." I sighed as I glanced at my feet.
"You shouldn't be ashamed of it, you still have your whole life ahead of you." Luke said as he nudged me.
I looked to Luke. "You do too."
"Heh. Yep. I do." Luke smiled shyly.
And this whole time I knew I was lying to the boy, I was not oblivious, I was not a fool. I knew everything and even some things he didn't quite know yet.
And I don't know how it made me feel.
I walked into the motel room with Luke and saw that Calum and Ashton were no where's to be found.
"Where'd they go?" Luke asked.
"Dunno." I shrugged.
"Well, I guess we'll just..Do something." Luke shrugged.
"Yeah, we can just watch a movie I suppose. There's not much else to do in a motel room." I said.
Luke nodded and sat down on the bed while I put on a movie for us to watch. He waited and watched me as I sat down on the bed next to him.
Throughout the movie I kept looking at Luke, seeing his facial expressions changing.
Poor boy, he doesn't realize I'm the one who will ruin his life.
But then something hit me, I could let Luke get away. Mess up evidence and therefore the case. Luke and Calum wouldn't get the death sentence, I was sure of that.
