A person is born with feelings of envy and hate. Of he gives way to them, they will lead him to violence and crime, any good sense of loyalty and good faith will be abandoned. ~Xun Zi

Michael's POV

I woke up that morning. A note from Ashton saying he went to town so I was stuck here unless I wanted to walk.

I climbed out of bed, got dressed, did my hair and teeth before sitting on my bed and hearing an odd conversation outside.

"Luke, relax. Just me today okay? You're sick and you need to stay here." A male voice said and I approached the door to listen closer.

"Don't leave me here all a-alone.." Another voice whimpered.

"I'll be back before you know it." The first said and I heard footsteps walking away before feet dragged across the ground. I opened up my door, looking to my left I saw a brunette. To my right, an oh so familiar blonde was sitting on the ground. Sniffling.

I tried to act like I was going to the tiny store and I managed just that. I walked up to the clerk.

"Excuse me sir, my name is detective Michael Clifford." I said. "Could you tell me anything about that blonde boy out there?"

"Ugh that one." He shook his head disapprovingly. "He shouldn't have left home with his mother. All he does is stutter and stumble over himself. It's quite annoying."

"Huh.." I mumbled. "So he obviously doesn't talk to strangers?"

"No, he does not. I was considering calling an ambulance because I thought something might be wrong with him." he scoffed. "Otherwise all I know his that him and his friend have been here a few days. Why? Are they in trouble?"

"Just runaways." I sighed. "I just don't want to jump on him."

"I see I see. Well nice meeting you detective." He said. I nodded and walked out of the store. The blonde was no longer outside so I returned to my room. Every once and a while poking my head out to see if he was out there. Ashton didn't come back all day and neither did Luke's friend by the guess if it. But when the sun was finally on the horizon I poked my head out and saw the blonde sitting in the dirt.

I walked over to him slowly, saw his red puffy eyes and decided to be careful.

"Um..Hey." I said and he jumped and looked at me with wide eyes. "Are you, are you okay?"

"I-I'm not s-suppose to talk to stra-strangers." Luke mumbled.

"Well if I told you my name I wouldn't be a stranger anymore, now would I?" I asked. "May I sit?" He nodded as I sat down in the dirt with him. "Nice shirt."

"T-Thanks."

"My name is Michael." I smiled.

"I'm-I'm Luke." He said. Flashing bright blue eyes to me.

"So, why are you out here in the dirt anyways?" I asked.

"My-My friend went to the-uh-the town." Luke said. "He-He should be back by-by now."

"My friend is there too, he's been gone all day. Maybe I could wait with you?" I asked. "It's awful lonely in my room."

"S-Sure." Luke nodded.

"So, you from Nevada?" I asked.

"Um..N-No, Utah." Luke said.

"Oh. Me too!" I said. "Small town out there."

"Oh.. M-Me too. But..I've never met you a-and I know everyone." Luke puzzled. "B-But you look fa-familiar."

"You do too. I only moved their recently." I shrugged. "So, how old are you Luke?"

"Um.. Seventeen." Luke said.

"Seventeen? Aren't you still in school then?" I asked.

"U-Uh we're um..On vacation." He said. "How-um..How old are you?"

"I'm twenty-five." I nodded. Luke nodded in response as he picked at his pants. "You're very shy."

"I-I get that a-a lot." Luke shrugged.

"Yeah," I said. "You get a lot about that stutter too, don't you?" I honestly felt bad for Luke. A shy kid, get yelled at because he can't handle it.

"That's-That's why Calum is a-a good friend." Luke smiled. "I only, I only stutter when I'm ner-nervous."

"Calum the one you're waiting for?" I asked and Luke gave a nod.

I managed to hold a conversation with Luke until the sun when home. I definitely knew this kid was Luke Hemmings and I knew he was smart too. He had no idea I was an cop, but I didn't know if I even wanted to bring in Luke. He seemed so sweet, shy, gentle. He wouldn't last a second in jail or in the court. And now I could see why everyone liked Luke. He was just likable. But if he could act this way for everyone else, then he could win.

"Oh, a car." Luke said as he pointed towards the direction Ashton's car was coming in. Ashton climbed out and then a brunette.

"Calum!" Luke yelled and ran over to his friend.

"Ash?" I asked and he walked over to me.

"I found Calum Hood, I was gonna say he could help with Luke. But I see you've already found him." Ashton whispered. "But let's wait a few days to bring them in. That way we won't have to fight as much."

"Oh. Yeah, okay." I nodded.

"But now, befriend them." Ashton smiled.

"Oh Ash, is this your friend?" The brunette, who I assume is Calum said while approaching me.

"Hi I'm de -" I paused. "I'm Michael."

"Hi, I'm Calum." He smiled and shook my head. "And this is Luke."

"We've met, actually." I smiled in response.

"Aw that's awesome." Calum smiled.

"Hey do you guys want to come eat with us?" Ashton asked.

"Well..Sure." Calum said. "Just let my drop these things off." So I headed over while Ashton told him the room number and we walked inside. Cleaning any of the evidence that we might be cops out and hiding it.

"So is this like undercover work?" I asked.

"I guess, just not really." Ashton said. "And I see that Calum and Luke may not be it, but like you said, it's our best lead."

"Yeah." I nodded as I put one more thing away. "Right."
