If you want to know who your friends are, get yourself a jail sentence. ~Charles Bukowski
Luke's POV
"Get in there." Someone snapped as I was shoved into a jail cell with Calum. Both of us were dressed in suits of orange. And I crouched down on the floor and broke into tears.
"Luke, do you want to talk about it?" Calum asked.
"He used me.." I mumbled. "Just to make sure he got another case solved. And-and now we're going to get convicted of manslaughter.."
"No, it'll be okay. We'll find a way out of this. Okay?" Calum said as he crouched down and rubbed my back gently. "Can, can you just tell me how far things got between you two?"
"All the way." I said as I hid my face in my hands. I heard Calum sigh but he didn't say anything else. Instead he just kept rubbing my back. "I thought he actually liked me.."
"Who's to say he didn't?" Calum asked.
"He was playing us the whole time." I said as I looked up to Calum.
"Luke, maybe he wasn't." Calum said. "Just think about it for a second. Michael and Ashton could have arrested us on the spot. But he didn't. Why do you think he didn't? Because he cares about you." There was a pause, a deep breath before continuing. "I knew the whole time."
"W-What?" I asked, going wide eyed.
"Look, I didn't want to say anything." Calum sighed. "I found Ashton's badge in his shirt pocket - "
"Why were you looking in his shirt pocket?" I asked and Calum's face turned a bright shade of red.
"That's not the point right now, the point is I found it. When I asked him about it, he just came clean. He told me that's what he was suppose to do but after seeing you and I he just..Couldn't. He knew Michael couldn't either." Calum sighed. "Luke we were found by mere chance and I swear Michael wasn't leading you on. He cared about you. Dammit he still does. Deep down I have faith that we will make it out of this alive. It will be okay."
"Okay." I breathed in. "What we do now then? Just sit around and wait for our trial? We're considered murderers. They aren't going to let us do anything, really."
"We just have to do whatever they say and don't bend down in the shower." Calum said.
"That's just a joke.." I said. "R-Right?"
"I am not about to find out." Calum said. "And neither are you, as far as I'm concerned you're Michael's."
"No I am not." I sighed. "I'm still upset with him. I would have felt much better if he just told me!"
"Hey boys," A guard spoke as he came towards the door. "For one you need to quiet down a little bit. It's disturbing those around you. And for another, it's time to eat. So I am going to let you out and you're going to follow me down the hall to the cafeteria. Alright?"
"Okay. Yeah." Calum said. "I get to stay with Luke, right?"
"Do you..Need to be with him always?" The guard asked as he looked us over. Calum walked over to the cell door and although he was whispering I could hear everything he was saying.
"Luke has social anxiety he won't talk to anyone he doesn't know. That's why I have to be there. Or else it'll just be one big disaster." Calum said.
"Alright, I can help you with that." The guard nodded. "C'mon boys." I followed Calum and the guard as Calum held a pretty humane conversation with the guard. The guard seemed more shocked then I was. A polite prisoner? A gentle guard?
So we went to the cafeteria and back to our cell. But it wasn't long that we spent just sitting in silence before the same guard approached the cell.
"Luke," He said and I lifted my head. "You have a visitor. So can you please come with me?"
"Go ahead Lukey." Calum smiled at me and I walked over to he cell doors. Letting the guard cuff my wrists as he escorted me out of the cell and we walked down the hallway.
"You know, for a giant you really aren't threatening." The guard chuckled and I shrugged. "You've got a good friend in there."
"Thanks. I know." I gave a small smile and continued until I was sat in a room. Alone. I was thinking that I was going to be sitting at a telephone but I guess not. I wondered why. There were filing cabinets and I was sitting at a wooden desk. It looked almost vacant.
However I didn't have to wonder for long before the door opened and closed and I stood up immediately.
"Huh..I don't really like you in orange." The man in front of me said softly.
"M-Michael..Go away.." I whimpered. "I'm-I'm mad at you.."
Michael bit down on his lip. "Yeah, I know. You can't just hear me out though?" I shook my head furiously. "Oh really? Not even if I told you that I could help you out of this mess?"
"How.." I said quietly.
"I'll get fired, but it's worth it." Michael sighed. "If I tamper with evidence, contaminate it, then that part of the case is invalid."
"Don't do that." I sighed as I sat down on a chair. Pulling my legs up to my chin. Michael walked next to me and pulled up a chair and sat closely to me.
"You really do hate me.." Michael said quietly. I didn't say anything, I just turned my head to the side and tried to ignore him. "You're not going to talk to me?" I didn't say anything.
"Fine. See you in court Mr. Hemmings." Michael snarled and he slammed his fist off the table and stomped out of the room, slamming the door. It took everything in me not to burst into tears as the guard came back in and brought me back to the cell. Where I knew I would have to explain to Calum that I ruined my one chance to get us out of this mess.
