Michael's POV

"Ashton!" I yelled as I ran into his hotel room. "Ashton, come on, get up."

"What? It's our day off." Ashton groaned.

"No it's not, because our work is not done." I said.

"Why not?" Ashton sighed as he climbed out of bed and began to get dressed.

"Because," I breathed. "I can't be the reason that Luke and Calum get the death sentence."

"But you aren't the reason." Ashton shrugged. "They did this to themselves. They killed that principal and you know it."

"No I don't know it and do you know why?" I asked.

"Because you're in love with a killer?"

"No because he isn't a killer!" I yelled. "He could not have done this! Luke is not the culprit. All I have to do is be able to prove it and we are golden, pony boy."

"Don't ever make that reference again." Ashton sighed as he slid on his shoes. "So where do you want to start?"

"Can we still get inside the school?" I asked, Ashton nodded. "Then lets go there first, maybe we could find some clue they left behind. But we have to be quick. The next court date is tomorrow and Luke is going to have to defend his case."

"You really like this boy, don't you?" Ashton asked and it made me stop in my tracks and turn to him.

"Well..Yeah. I do." I shrugged.

"How do you see past the fact that he's being convicted of murder."

"He's not a killer!"

"I didn't say that though." Ashton sighed. "I'm saying that you're going to have to find some pretty solid evidence that they are not killers. How do you plan on doing that? Everyone else has so much against you."

I took a deep breath. "I'll find out."

"Alright then, lets go because I want to get Calum out of there too." Ashton said.

"Hold up." I laughed. "Did I hear that right? What happened between you and Cal!"

"The only difference between you and I, is that I told Calum what I was. I didn't lie about it and therefore hurt his feelings." Ashton said smugly. "He knew the whole time that you and I were cops."

"Ashton you ruined the whole point of going 'under cover'." I rolled my eyes.

"You're one to talk." Ashton scoffed. "Michael, can you tell me the truth?

"The truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth." I said. "Yeah, I can."

"Do you honestly think that the boys will be seen innocent?" Ashton asked.

"Considering Luke had to leave the court room because he was vomiting..Yeah, I could say that they would see him innocent." I said.

The two of us got into Ashton's car without another word. We were both racing with nerves, but neither of us said a word about it. However, I felt extremely guilty from the boys being in jail. Especially after seeing Luke inside there. Looking so scared. His sleeves were pulled all the way down, as far as he could get him. His jacket was up to the top button. Almost as if he wanted to look like a gentleman. And when his arms were folded, sometimes you would see him reach up and rub at the number 1-1-3-4-2-8-7, on his jacket. As if he was trying to rub it away. Jail was certainly no place for a boy like Luke Hemmings. That was for certain.

Ashton finally arrived at the school. There were less people on guard now, much less considering how long it had been. We hadn't given them permission to clean up yet, and now I am glad we didn't.

It was weird to think about, less than a month ago I thought that Luke was the criminal. I knew he was, that he had committed the crime no doubt. But honestly, now I was just trying to find a way to get him out of this mess because I knew he wasn't the man responsible for this. Calum wasn't either.

"Detective Clifford, Detective Irwin." An officer said. "Can I, help you?"

"Take us down to the boiler room please." I said and the man nodded before escorting us down the stairs where we would look at the machine once more. All of the dust in the air was settled around the area. Then I noticed something. Something I did not notice before.

I saw it when I was looking at the melted metal. There was a scorch mark, at least a foot or more away from it.

"Hold on.." I said. "What is that?" I pointed at the marking on the floor.

"That would be caused by an explosion sir." The officer said.

"But..If that's the stink bomb," I pointed at the metal. "And the scorch mark is over here, how would the boys contraption have exploded over there? It melted to the floor over here."

"Yeah, and I don't know about you, but that scorch mark seems way too big for something like this." Ashton said as he pointed at the pile of the remnants of a stink bomb.

"That must mean.." The officer said. "That the boys bomb didn't blow up this machine! It wasn't their fault at all!"

"Well then..What did?" Ashton asked.

"There has to be some remains of it somewhere around here!" I said. "Turn on the lights, we have to find something. Ashton, glove me." Ashton passed me a pair of gloves as we bent down and began to shift through the area, looking for anything.

We spent all day searching, we didn't stop until about seven o'clock at night.

"Michael we need to get that report in now." Ashton said. "I can keep looking here, but take my car and go write up a report for this. Now!" Ashton threw me the keys and I sped out of the room as fast as I possibly could.

I had to do this, because this was Luke and Calum's last hope.
