I've wanted to be a cop since I was fourteen years old. Life was never easy, no one was watching out for me, so I promised myself one day I would watch out for the kid that had no one. So I worked harder than I had in my entire life to get into the academy. I decided to become emancipated when I turned sixteen, so I have been paying my own way since then. I worked full time on top of school to pay for my tiny, one-room apartment my last years of high school and all through college, getting my degree in criminal justice. When I finally applied for the academy, it felt like my life was finally starting. Like everything I had ever been through suddenly became worth it. When I graduated, I made sure I was the best patrolmen at the 31st, and was quickly promoted to their gang unit. Eventually, after two years my file said "Detective Hudson" and I was the first one through the door every bust. I met Hank Voight when our sergeant asked him to brief us on the most recent gang war, whose drugs ended up in our turf. He helped us with the case, bringing along his detectives Lindsey and Olinsky. He gave me an offer to take Lindsey's spot in intelligence, and that's how I ended up here. Walking into district 21, starting my first day in the most elite unit in the CPD.
"Detective Hudson?" The desk sergeant asked.
"Yes ma'am." I respond, beaming.
"Relax Ms.Sunshine, here's your paperwork, I need it back by the end of the week to get you your new ID and all that." She sighs, "I'll buzz you up." She gives me a bored look before slamming a stack of papers down on the desk.
"Thank you, sergeant...Platt." I say after checking her pin, I gave her a satisfied smile and walked up the first set of stairs. I take a deep breath and push through the metal gate. Intelligence is the best of the best, being in this unit is the reason I became a cop. To take down the worst of the worst.
Voight met me at the top of the stairs, giving me a hug before turning me around to face the rest of the team. "I want everyone to meet Detective Hudson, she's permanently joining our unit. Make her feel welcome." He pats my back and heads to his office. "Halstead. Meet your new partner."
He says to the guy sitting in the desk closest to his office. I make my way towards him, giving everyone a kind smile. He stands and reaches out to shake my hand, "Jay Halstead, I guess we should get to know each other."
I laugh, nodding my head slightly and shaking his hand. "Maybe, Brooke Hudson."
He leans against his desk, "So, where'd you come from Hudson?" I take a second to look at him, he has this slight stubble across his jaw, and biceps bigger than anyone I've ever seen.
"The 31st, gang unit, I was there for about four years."
He nods, giving me a sideways smile, "Gang units no joke, I give it you know what your doing."
I smirk a bit, "I think so." He chuckles and sits back down at his desk.
Two women who I come to know as Hailey Upton and Kim Burgess come up and introduce themselves to me. "Hudson." I hear Voight yell, "Take the desk between Dawson and Halstead." I nod, dropping my bag down on the desk. Jay's jaw tightened and looked as if he was going to say something. I gave him a questioning look and he just looked away.
"Ok, we got a name for our DOA from the scene last night. Her name is Miranda Graham, 21, her records clean." An officer, I think, is named Adam Ruzek says as he places a picture on the board. Voight nods quickly giving orders to the team.
"Alright, Hudson, Halstead, go inform the family and see if you can get any information out of them. Halstead, catch her up on the drive over. Upton, Atwater, check with your CI's to see if anyone knows this girl. Al, Ruzek, check in with the crime lab about prints from the scene. Dawson, Burgess, you're with me. We have a deceased girl and no leads, I need boots on the ground now."
