JAY'S POV
I'm sitting in the back of the surveillance van with Ruzek, Upton and Atwater, monitoring the wires when the worst possible thing you can here comes through. "Sorry, but I don't like having cops as my play things."
"Oh shit." Adam says before the 4 of us burst out of the van, and start to run the 4 block trek to the house. When we get there, I don't waist anytime kicking the door in. Somehow the party crowd we know was there had gotten away. "Jay!" Rusek yells, signally me back out of the house. He yells into his radio, "5021 Ida, we have a dark blue van heading southbound," We all take off running after the van, "No plates, I repeat a dark blue van with no plates, requesting immediate backup on the corner of West 22nd and Gordon," he takes a breath, "We have 2 abducted officers."
We sprint back to our rigs as we see patrol passing us, heading in the direction that the van fled. Ruz jumps in with me and we race after the patrol cars, Hailey and Kev on our tails. Another call comes through, "We have eyes, dark blue van turning onto North 45th," I flip on the sirens and ditch patrol, hoping to get ahead, I roll through a few red lights, horns are honking everywhere, but I really don't care.
Ahead of us I see a van pull out matching the description and I step on the gas, we're approaching train tracks where the caution gates are flashing. Perfect. All the sudden the guy floors it and makes it through, nearly getting clipped by the front of the train. I slam on my breaks, sending both Adam and I lurching forward. We're trapped. "5021 George, we lost eyes. I repeat, does anyone have a visual?" I yell into my radio as Adam slams the dash. All the responses are the same, we lost them.
Everyone meets back in the basement of the district, Voight is more than pissed. "How were they made?" He screams and Hailey speaks up.
"I was looking through the online files on the way back, a detective in Brooke's old unit picked up two low level Latin Kings a week from when she transferred, she wasn't involved in the arrest, but they must have seen her when they were in lock up." She explains, I clench my fists, trying to keep a hold of myself, unlike Adam, who has steam coming out of his ears.
Voight's jaw tightens, "Well that's a place to start."
I'm on my fifth cup of coffee as I watch the sun come up in the break room. Hailey and Kev went with Antonio to go pick up the two guys who possibly tipped off Mendosa, Voight made Adam and I stay here. Apparently we are too emotionally invested to keep our heads on straight, I think that's complete bullshit.
I've spent the last several hours watching Adam pace around the room and break things. Him and Burgess have been broken up for a long time, but it's obvious he still loves her. For me, I keep replaying everything Brooke has ever said to me. About her dad and the abuse, I can't imagine how terrified she must be, I trigger her sometimes, there's no way they won't spark a nerve.
Atwater comes in with one of the guys and heads for the interrogation rooms, Adam notices the commotion and lunges for the door, but I intercept him. "Dude, if you kill him we won't get them back."
Adam takes an angry step backwards and runs his hands through his hair, "What if they're already dead man?" I hadn't even thought of that, in my mind there is no possible way they could be dead.
I try to rationalize, pushing the thought far away, "If they wanted them dead, they would have just shot them." I say, trying to convince Adam and myself. "They want something from us."
Right? They wouldn't go through all the trouble of taking them if they just wanted to kill them.
This week has been a whirlwind, I got a new partner, my new partner almost died, and now she's been abducted. Honestly, I was pretty upset when Voight introduced me to Hudson, he had just swapped partners around, I was with Hailey before and we were working pretty well. Brooke though, she's not what I was expecting. That first day, when I went to her apartment, I had no idea what I was doing, but after everything with Erin I was determined to make this partnership work. I definitely wasn't expecting any of this though.
