*Shawn's POV*
"Nash! Someone! Call an ambulance!" I heard in the background of my call with Nash.
Immense worry filled every inch of my body, taking over all of my senses.
It sounded like Cameron was sobbing as he screamed. Something was wrong.
"Cameron! Emiko! What happened?!? Oh my god, what happened?!?" I heard Nash screaming through the phone, and that was when I knew I was going to have to run back to Michigan.
"What?!? What happened?!? Is she okay?!!" I roared, anger and helplessness filling my being.
"Shawn, you need to get here now. I don't know if she's gonna make it, man," Taylor sobbed into the phone, causing my pace to quicken and breaths shutter.
Werewolves could run for extended periods of time, obviously inhumanly fast.
Tears streamed down my face as I ran out of the hotel, struggling to breathe at the thought of what could've happened to her.
The mate bond. It had then hit me that being so far away from her for so long took a huge toll on her health. If I didn't get there in time, she could die.
That thought made me run harder than ever before, the rain that was falling from the sky soaking me.
I was on tour with Austin in Nashville at the time, but I needed to get to her. I was going to take a plane and go visit her today, that's why I was originally on the phone with Nash, and Cameron earlier that day. I missed her, and even though I couldn't decipher exactly what they meant, they had both said she wasn't doing so good.
I could've put the pieces together sooner, she was dying. The mate bond was killing her, and I could bet that she hadn't eaten or slept since I had left. It was all my fault; I should've taken her with me. I don't know why I had even begun to think that I could stand that long without her, even I was slowly starting to go insane since she wasn't here. It affected both of us, but her more because she was human. If she died, I would die. That was it for the both of us.
I ran through a forest quickly, jumping over or around anything that was in my path. I couldn't have told you how hard I ran for how long, but it was probably around 2 and a half hours when I caught her scent, about 3 miles away at a hospital.
I ran harder, entering the hospital in a full-on sprint. I stopped abruptly at the desk, speaking quickly to the receptionist.
"Emiko Matthews," I rushed, tapping my fingers on the wood.
"Room 348, but she's not taking visitors right now," she said, being careful to not upset me.
This was a hospital specifically for werewolves and other supernatural creatures, every state, sometimes even every city had one. Humans could only enter if they were the mates, parents, siblings, or relatives of a supernatural creature, and regular humans thought it was abandoned. Reverse mountain ash (also called white mountain ash) kept them from entering anyway.
"I need her, now! She's dying because I'm not with her!" I yelled, slamming my fist on the wood.
My fist made a hole in the wood, and I was almost positive my eyes were the typical alpha silver.
"I'm sorry, Alpha Mendes. Right this way," she replied; I was a well known, very powerful alpha around here.
I all but sprinted to the room, and when I got there, everything got blurry.
I was crying, again. Her frail body lay in a hospital bed, many tubes and wires going into her body. An oxygen mask was placed over her face, telling me that she couldn't even breathe on her own. It broke my heart entering the room, but I knew when I touched her it would all go away.
I sat next to her for a minute, wallowing in my own self pity for a moment, but when I heard the heart monitor slowing, I knew I had to act now.
I took her hand quickly, but the heart monitor continued to slow, scaring me. All of the sudden everything just stopped; the monitor wasn't even beeping anymore, but she wasn't dead. She couldn't be dead, or at least that's what I thought before a long beep filled the air, crushing my heart and lungs.
I gasped for air, almost falling to the floor, but I regained my balance enough to reach in and kiss her softly on the lips.
A gasp for air was heard, and I could actually breathe again.
She was alive.
