The couple arrived at the hospital an hour later, thankfully Rebecca had packed the bags a few weeks prior and put them in the car just in case this happened.
A nurse was in the process of taking blood and vitals while another was putting monitors on Rebecca and another was checking her dilation
"Have you been in labor very long?" The nurse asked
"Um.. I don't know" Rebecca shrugged
"Have you been having contractions?" She asked with a sympathetic smile
"I'm not sure.. I mean I think I had the first one at three this afternoon but I feel like I'm getting Braxton Hicks a lot lately so I didn't think anything of it" she shook her head
"How far apart are they?"
"they've been happening every fifteen minutes since then" she informed
"Oh yes sweetie, you've been in labor since three I would say" the nurse nodded "You're at four.. that's almost half way there" she said and Rebecca looked over at her husband who looked like a ghost
"Are you okay?" She asked him
"You're asking me if I'm okay? You're in labor and you're asking me if I'm okay.." Colby shook his head
"You look like you're about to pass out"
"That's a normal look from fathers" the nurse said with a smile "but do us a favor dad, if you're gonna faint, fall to the left" she said and Rebecca looked at her husband with wide eyes
"Do you want to sit down?" She asked and he shook his head
"I'm fine" he said
"You're at a four, We're just getting started but so far you're handling this like a champ" the nurse nodded
"If you only knew.." Colby said with a smirk
An hour later Colby sat next to his wife, holding her hand tightly in his and she squeezed his hand and stared straight ahead.
"Breathe" he said "you have to breathe.. do you remember the books?"
"I never read the books, not even the first time around" she let out a shaky breath
"Wait a minute, you made me suffer through three of those pregnancy and birth books about what's going to happen down there and you traumatized me about what it's going to look like and you never read?"
"I don't want to know"
"Like I do?" He asked and she let out a slight laugh "I'm glad I'm still hearing that right about now" he said with a nod
"I'm sorry for whatever I say to you in the future"
"In one ear and out the other" he nodded
They spent the next hours walking up and down the hallway, taking showers to alleviate the pain as much as possible.
"Hey" Rebecca said as she leaned against his chest with her arms around his neck and they swayed side to side
"Yeah?" he looked down at her
"I'm glad you're here"
"Where else would I be?" he kissed her head and he felt her grip tighten around him "Breathe.." he said as he ran his hands up and down her back "You're doing amazing" he said
