Prologue
I sat there listening to the roaring noises of the cafeteria surrounding me rather than my two best friends bicker over whatever sparked this week's gossip at my school. Reagan highschool was large enough to find stupid drama to talk about amongst the students, but drama not important enough for me to care about. All I could really think about was the text I got earlier about how my mom got me the book I had been telling her about all week. I couldn't wait to get home and read Turtles all the Way Down with her."No, but Griffin mentioned to me and Rory that he had met him at that summer camp, right Ror?" One of my best friends said, ripping me from my trance.
I turned to Levi, "What?"
Levi was my first ever friend from way back in grade school. After being pushed off of the swings by our school's bully, he was the only kid to help me up. I remember his crooked teeth and plaid shorts like it was yesterday. We grew up a few houses down from each other, doing everything together over the years. He helped me through my first breakup, held my hair back after the first time I got drunk, and was right beside me at my father's funeral. Levi was there with me through everything, just as I had been there for him. Like the day he tried to run away from home when he was 8, notice how I said tried, I was on the couch next to him when he came out to his parents when he was 16, and I was there the day his parents got a divorce. Levi was a true friend in my eyes, and I was lucky for him too. True friends are hard to find these days.
I looked at my best friend in confusion trying to understand where I fit into the conversation. "Today in math, Griffin said he met the friend that is moving here at some summer camp a few years ago in Canada, but Kennedy swears it was on a vacation. Tell her I'm right," Levi states, his arms akimbo.
Kennedy was our other best friend in our little circle. We met her the summer before freshman year when me and Levi hung out at the diner Levi's family owns. Kennedy walked in and asked for a milkshake and just sat down at our table. She introduced herself and we instantly hit it off. The diner became our spot to hang and the three of us has been the closest of friends ever since. We took that friendship all the way to our highschool, where Levi plays for the soccer team, I dominate in volleyball and Kennedy is our cheerleader. Even when our sports overtake our lives, we all still find ways to hang out, and eat at the diner together almost everyday.
"Honestly I think it was camp, sorry Ken," I say to my bestie. Kennedy gave me a playful eye role in return. "What are you guys even talking about anyway?" I asked them.
"Welllll," Levi beams, straightening up and turning to me. "That guy that griffin is friends with is like- totally hot, I looked him up last night when a few girls were talking about him on twitter and may I just say...wow," Levi exaggerates, no matter how much I love him, he can be very annoying.
"Everyone is talking about him, since Griffin mentioned him a few days ago, I just hope he isn't like Griffin. We have enough F-Boys at this school," Kennedy chimed in.
I look at what is making the obnoxious noise at the entrance of the cafeteria, "speak of the devil."
Griffin walks in laughing annoyingly loud with a few guys that I recognize to be Levi's teammates. He struts over to our table and plops down, the other guys sitting around him.
"Sup Rory. Levi." He nods at us before pausing and turning to Kennedy and wiggling his eyebrows. "Hey Kennedy," he says in a husky tone.
"Hi," she says back, rolling her eyes. When will he get over his stupid crush on her from freshman year. We are seniors now, he is still trying, and she is still uninterested.
I turn to the rest of the guys that came in with him, "You guys gonna come support your girl at her first game of the season...as captain," I beam, so happy that three years of hard work finally gave me the title on the volleyball team. The boys gave me a few 'whoop whoops' and whistles.
"Yeah, me and Toby are gonna be there. And I am just letting you know, we totally made awesome signs." Drew said fist bumping Toby, his twin.
"I am gonna bring Weston. He should be getting here by then," Griffin tells me. I shoot him a confused look. Levi notices.
"What, we were just talking about Weston. That's Griff's friend that we have been talking about." Oh. That makes sense. I nod.
The rest of the soccer boys all tell me if they can make it or not, and we finish up the lunch period. The whole time I was thinking about that game. Our school values volleyball like other schools value football. The stands are always packed, the cheerleaders cheer at about half of our games and the whole school loves us. I know it prolly sounds like it all must make me popular, but quite honestly I don't care about all that (there is never a popularity contest in my eyes) . I'd be happy if it was just Levi, Kennedy and I, but having the team is the best. Especially since now I'm captain.
The only thing I am really worried about is that we lost our setter this year because she graduated. We have another setter but for three years I worked with Natalie hand in hand with me as her hitter. We were amazing. Our school has won the last few year's state championships and I am hoping to get another this year. But, without Natalie I don't know what I will do. I guess that will get all cleared up at practice today.
I was walking to my next class with my two best friends. We all had majority classes together so this wasn't anything new. I walked into math and we took our usual seats. But, there was something different about the people in the room. All the girls were in their own little huddles hunching over their phones. What was so important? I walked over to one of the girls I recognized from my team. I ask her what's up and she fills me in.
"Just look at him. I can't believe He is going to be coming to our school. Oh-I hope he talks to me." Sam says to me guestering to her phone. She shows me a post on Instagram of some guy. I understand why she would think he was attractive but he wasn't worth drooling over like every girl in the classroom was. Sure, he has really nice brown curly hair and a nice body, but he wasn't no Ian Somerhalder. Ugh, I really gotta stop Levi and Kennedy from making me watch the Vampire Diaries, I think I actually might like that sappy girl show.
"Sam, you could do a lot better than that guy, girl. Who is that anyway." I ask towering over little Sam.
That is usually what is like since I am about 5'10, naturally earning my dad's height. My Dad was 6'4 and a stronger guy than most. who played soccer in college. My mom met him there, when she was playing in a volleyball game, giving me my own natural talent for volleyball. From a young age they would make me play both their sports, but with my dad's height I clearly would excel as a hitter in volleyball. Been my passion ever since.
I shake my head free of reminiscing on my parents and focus back on the 5'6 girl in front of me.
"What do you mean Aurora, that's Weston Andrews." Sam says blatantly to me.
