Song: No Roots - Alice Merton
5 – Lillith
I don't fully believe Garak's statement about Obi and I making a bet like this, until she pulls out a sheet of paper and my signature is scribbled across the bottom of the paper along with Obi's chicken scratch letters. The rest of the paper outlines our deal in detail. Garak leaves us with the paper after freeing Mitsuhide and Kiki and Shirayuki and Prince Zen leave a moment later.
"I'm going to be sick." I mumble and a waste basket appears beside me. I chuckle and shake my head. "Not literally, but thank you. How did we manage to drink enough to get into this mess? I have no interest in making you fall in love with me."
"It's not exactly my plan either, besides what would get out of it at the end? If one did lose, then that person is going to be stuck with unrequited feelings."
I scan the paper before sighing. "According to this, the winner gets full bragging rights and gets to string the loser's underwear throughout the castle. We are so stupid. I vote we never get that drunk or play games with Garak again."
"I second that." Obi gets to his feet and stretches before running a hand through his hair. "What if we just make sure we're seen around each other more often around Garak and the others and fake that we're trying, then both lose when the month is over? That way we don't have to deal with her whining that we didn't follow through but we aren't trying to do the stupid competition."
"You're smart." I hum as he helps me up. "I'm impressed. Alright boyfriend, let's not do this. Also, according to the tallies, I won the other bets last night so you can carry me to breakfast today as your punishment."
"Really?"
"I always mean what I say." I grin before climbing up onto his back despite his protests. "Onward noble steed!"
"I'm not a horse..."
"Onward noble catlike man! There, is that better?"
Obi brings me to my room first to change and freshen up thankfully, because my first look into the mirror was a bit of a shock. Garak drew smiley faces and wrote her name on my cheek and my hair looks like birds tried to nest in it. After cleaning myself up, I change into a loose fitting tunic and black leggings, then brush my unruly hair. I still look rough but I'm better than I was. I sigh at my reflection and rub at the dark circles around my bright blue eyes. I tear my gaze away as Obi calls for me to hurry up from the other side of the door. I stick my tongue out at the door before pulling on my boots and heading out. As soon as I shut the door I jump onto his back again and demand he carry me to the kitchens.
"Obi? Why are you always so quiet around me?" I ask as I rest my chin on his shoulder.
"I can tell that you don't care for my presence so I try to stay out of your way."
I arch a brow and shake my head. "I don't hate you, it's just Garak-"
"-tries to make something out of nothing?" He finishes and I nod.
"Always. I love her to death but anytime I'm near a male she thinks something of it. It's easier to keep my distance."
"That's understandable. She is a bit much at times, but so are you."
"Rude." I scowl as I lightly smack the back of his head.
"I never said it was a bad thing. The castle gets boring at times."
"I'm always bored unless I'm pestering Garak." I hum. "It's not exactly a thrill ride being an archer in the guard. Stand at the post on the wall, shoot any enemies. Occasionally move to the forts to assist in any training or join in any fights. Not much fun unless there's a war."
"Can I ask why you became an archer?"
"My father hunted using bow and arrow when I was a child. I learned by watching him and I can handle a bow better than a sword. I can use both, but I prefer long distance. I'm small enough to hide and use stealth to attack as well. Why did you join the castle employ?"
"It's a long story. Now, we're here, so get down and get your food."
After taking our breakfast from the kitchen, Obi and I part ways. I'm going to go harass Garak and he mentioned something about napping off his hangover when he's done eating. As good of an idea as that sounds, annoying Garak while she's hungover sounds more fun. I throw open the doors to the medical building and loudly call out a greeting, hurting my own ears but her expression makes it worth it. She glares up at me while rubbing her temples and tells me that the herbal remedy hadn't kicked in yet. I pat her head with one hand as I pull the bacon and egg sandwich from my mouth with the other.
"Can I have one of those remedies?"
"I can fix you right up... lean down so I can punch you in the head."
"That's rude. I'll just go ask Shirayuki for one."
"Good luck, she was passed out on her desk when I checked on her a few minutes ago."
I shrug and head down the hall toward Shirayuki's desk. As expected, the redhead is fast asleep with her head in her hand. I peek over her shoulder while trying to eat my sandwich without dropping my bacon and notice her page is open to the hangover remedy. Everything is right there on the desk... It can't be that hard, can it?
I glare up at Garak from my spot in one of the infirmary beds. Apparently with some of the herbs there's a fine line between medicinal and poison. I had just one leaf too many on one ingredient and instead of curing my hangover, I poisoned myself and passed out. Thankfully it's nothing severe but now the rest of my final day off will be stuck in this bed. I should have just taken a nap like Obi did.
