Ever since we had our chat I have been waiting for the day when we get to go out as a group, today, a nice Saturday afternoon. I also arranged to meet with my ‘old’ friends while we are at the mall and I am so excited that my new friends will get to meet my old friends. The trips and I decided to dress in similar colours: Pink. Lissa came up with the idea and naturally Asa and Ally agreed, so therefore I was left out. Pink is my fav colour, but I just don’t feel like it #The_Story_of_my_Life.
“I don’t even have something pink in my closet. And in any case it’s your thing to be dressed similarly” I whine.
“Don’t lie. In any case you can borrow from either Ally or I, so shut your trap and let’s get changed,” Asa says while pulling Lissa along behind her.
Once we were all dressed we walked downstairs (and might I add that we got a few looks of admiration and jealousy from people?) and over to the parking lot.
“It took you guyz long enough. I might’ve grown a few years before you decided to arrive,” says Zach.
“Blame the princess over here,” says Ally while pulling in for a hug from him. Then I see Jordan and Asa hugging and sneaking in a little peck.
“Get a room.”
“You make me wanna puke.” Andy and I say in unison.
“In any case, why don’t we all get a hug?” I ask the two males. They both promptly looked away and I rolled my eyes.
“Urm, okay, come in for a hug then, Kris,” says Zach robotically. “Sure,” Jordan adds.
“I don’t want one from you guyz anymore. Come Andrew and Charles, you’ll get some Kris hug action,” I say with a pout and hug Andrew fiercely and Charles less fierce.
“OK… are you done with your hugging tantrum, Kris?” asks Lissa.
“It wasn’t a tantrum and in any case, yes I am ready to pile in.”
“Come on in kids,” Charles says ushering us in the bus.
It is an hour drive to the mall from SNH. The highway wasn’t really all that busy so I had the chance to gaze out of the window when it wasn’t shadowed by some obnoxious truck. There were beautiful green fields and trees all the way there. Every 10 kilometres or so we would see some cows, or other livestock, grazing and frolicking happily across the fields.
All the while the rest of the crew kept up a constant stream of chatter while I “mmhh’d & aahh’d” at appropriate socially accepted intervals.
I’m worried. I’m worried that things will be awkward with Dee, Tarryn and Mel. What if they think I’ve changed? What if they don’t like my new friends? What if the crew doesn’t like them? It’s really hard balancing old relationships with new ones. No matter how hard you try to keep everything the same, people lose interest in trying to be friends because it’s too much effort, because they feel like you don’t want to talk to them while you are waiting for that greeting to re-assure you that we are still friends to make sure that they still want to talk to you.
“Kris, what’s wrong?” Charles said from behind me. The bus is a 32-seater with two seats behind each other and across the aisle another two sets piling up behind. There was only the crew here and a few other kids from other grades that I don’t know. “You’ve been quiet the whole way and that’s uncharacteristic of you.”
“Just thinking,” I answer.
“Well stop that thinking, it’s making you frown and I don’t want you to be or sad or to frown.” Is that cute, or not.
