Ray arrived promptly as planned, the smile on his face making it clear that everything had gone to plan. I gave him a relieved smile as I let him in to the house.
Everyone was still in the kitchen, taking the brownies out of the oven, except for Frank, Lyn-Z and I.
Ray dropped his work bag on the ground, "I told them I was organizing the archives and I came across this file and didn't recognize it. When they asked if I had looked inside of it, I said no. Pretty sure they believed me."
It was like the weight of the world had been lifted off of my chest. Now we just had to sit back and wait for the Better Living Industries and Battery City Co. to start destroying each other. Once they were suitably distracted and weakened, we would go somewhere. I wasn't worried about where.
Lyn-Z breathed a sigh of relief, she'd been told all the details of the plan on our way over, and Frank grabbed my hand to squeeze it tightly. Things were looking up.
"Did I hear Ray?" Jimmy came walking out of the kitchen with brownie crumbs on his face and Pete, Patrick and Mikey trailing behind him.
"Jimmy!" Ray gave him a one-armed hug, "Where's Brendon?"
We all went silent, none of us wanting be the one to break the news, and Ray looked from face to face, seeming suitably confused. "Guys? What happened to him? Did he get killed?"
"He betrayed us. He's dead." Patrick whispered finally, surprising me by being the first to speak. Ray froze at his words, meeting my eyes pleadingly.
"T-that can't be true." He protested weakly, stumbling to the couch and sitting down heavily.
"Ray, I'm sorry." I said, doing my best to sound as comforting as I could, "I know he was your friend-"
"No." Ray interrupted, "No, that's not what upsets me. I trusted him, I told you guys he was loyal, I-"
Now I cut him off, "We all trusted him. We made our mistakes, and no one got hurt. In fact, we recruited someone new."
I gestured to Lyn-Z, who scoffed at me, "Gay didn't recruit me, I recruited myself." She informed Ray as she shook his hand with a friendly smile, "I saved that asshole's life." Lyn-Z turned to me, "Ray and I worked together once before, I used to work for Better Living Industries, before you were there."
I raised an eyebrow at the two of them, making Ray blush furiously. "Not like that! I'm almost as gay as you are!"
Well, you learn something new every day. In truth, I wasn't too surprised. The organizations recruited kids who had been kicked out by their parents, often over their sexual orientation.
We all dispersed around the house, some people napping, some eating, some probably fucking. I was leaving the bathroom when I heard a small sob coming from a room down the hall.
I debated whether or not to go, and curiosity eventually got the best of me as I walked down the hall way and pushed open the door to reveal....Mikey?
He was sitting on the bed, obviously trying to rid himself of his tears and failing.
"Mikes? What's wrong?" I asked sympathetically, sitting beside him and putting a tentative arm around his shoulders.
"Pete and I broke up." Mikey muttered, "Not a big deal."
My blood boiled. This had to do with Patrick, I knew it did. Pete was supposed to look out for my brother and care about his feelings, not dump him for the first guy he saw. "I'll kill him." I growled, and it wasn't an empty threat. I was willing to kill both Pete and Patrick.
"Gerard, I broke up with him." Mikey blurted out, stunning me in to silence. But not for long.
"What? Why?"
"Because he doesn't love me. He's lying to himself." Mikey sounded so calm and mature that I wanted to cry. He was my little brother. I mentally reminded myself that Mikey was an adult, and clearly more mature than I ever was, and ever would be.
"Him and Patrick?" I asked gently, to which Mikey just nodded. We hugged once more, then he stood up and walked out of the room, leaving me to sit there and contemplate all that had and would happen in our crazy lives. So much was going on, and top it all off, there were relationships. I couldn't help but wonder if that was getting in the way. Survival had to be priority.
After a little while, I gathered my strength and composure to leave the room and find Frank. He was sitting alone on Patrick's couch, eating some of the brownies they'd all made and humming to himself cheerfully. Grinning at his contagiously happy mood, I sat next to him and pressed a kiss to his temple.
"Oh, hey Gee!" Frank said, kissing my lips lightly, leaving the sweet taste of brownie on my mouth, "What's up?"
I sighed, my bad mood returning as I remembered my conversation with Mikey, "My brother and Pete broke up."
"Patrick?"
"Yeah."
My boyfriend patted me on the back comfortingly, leaning his head on my shoulder, "He'll be fine. We can set him up with Ray."
I smile spread across my face as I thought about how compatible they would be. They liked the same music, they both read comics religiously... "You're right, Frank. I love you."
I looked down at where he rested on my shoulder to see him smiling, "I love you too."
