"Lila, let's go! We have a huge pay today!" my mom yelled throughout the house as if we weren't in the same house.
"Yeah yeah i'm coming just let me find my mask, there's no way I'm cutting grass without a mask on." I swept my entire vanity looking for the mask I could have sworn I put there; which makes me quite frustrated because I already don't want to be up at six in the morning cutting grass with my mom.
"There's one in the car! Let's go, now!" my mom rushed out of the house almost leaving me, I wish she did actually but I need the money during this supposed social distancing.
I grabbed my keys running to the door and locking it and headed my way to wherever we were going. Honestly I wasn't looking forward to twelve hours doing straight yard work and having my mom yell at me alongside. She's usually ready to yell at me over the smallest things but the pay is good so what the hell, right?
....................
"When we get to this man's house please put on your best behavior, we can't look like we come from where we come from." she said waving a finger in the air while her other hand was on the steering wheel.
I simply nodded, actually not caring because it's not like we come from a terrible place she's just overdramatic.
My mother turned into the neighborhood where it looked like people carried poodles and purses and where they'd jog in heels. It was a very gorgeous neighborhood.
"First house, remember manners and politeness"
"Mom, I'm eighteen I think I know how to act with strangers, okay?" I said annoyed with her trying to have me play along with her picture perfect family, I-
"Tone it down, you're still under my roof, just please be polite, alright?"
I nodded while she pulled into the driveway of the first person of the day. She got out of the car and told me to wait so she could introduce herself and scope out what needs to be done. I was upset that I didn't even get my morning coffee so that's just great.
The house was so nice. It's very modernized and looks like a cute box with nice garden work so I didn't understand what needed to be done really, the house was tip top shape.
My mom waved from the person's door to tell me to get out of the car, my phone rang and it was her.
"I saw you, I'm on the way out now." I unbuckled my seatbelt
"No, don't forget the brooms and cleaning supplies in the trunk please." she rose her voice up a bit then hung up
I got out of the car and slammed the door to make sure she heard it. Popping the trunk open I search for the cleaning supplies and the brooms but can't find the brooms. Now being a bit frustrated I scope through the entire trunk five times only to discover that there are no brooms. We're doing yard work, what the hell are brooms needed for anyways?
I walked up to the door but it was open so I just walked in and the house was a literal beautiful mess. Clothes everywhere, dishes are piled, instruments everywhere. However, the structure of the house was so beautiful the more I walked through it: 2 story, hardwood floors, beautifully furnished, gorgeous terrace and the view was beyond me.
"Excuse me, who are you?" I startled hearing a deep voice popped up behind me
"I'm sorry, I'm with the garden work lady, Kimberly." I turned around.
The man had an accent of some sort like from the UK or maybe Australia, no idea I confuse the two. He had black wavy hair, fair skin tone, and way taller than me.
"Umm the only Kimberly here is my new housekeeping lady." he looked at me sternly as if he felt I was lying to him.
"Okay, sir just let me get my daughter and we'll get down to busine-" my mom said happily coming down his stairs until she got cut off by seeing me.
"I forgot I told her to make her way in. I hope that wasn't interfering in any way." my mom acted so well she started believing her damn self.
"Not at all, but next time let me know everyone who's with you, I thought she was an intruder actually." He tried to slick laugh it off then slowly turned towards me.
I rolled my eyes turning back around to the beautiful view behind me while my mother laughed uncontrollably making me and the man feel a bit uncomfortable.
"Okay so um-" he pointed at me
"Lila." I said low but enough for him to hear me.
"Right! Lila, um your room is ready upstairs let me sh-" I turned around back to him and he pointed towards the stairs.
"I'm sorry, room?" my eyebrows lifted from curiosity.
"Yes, your room. Remember how I told you this would get you out the house?" My mom stepped forward.
"Mom you said the pay would get me out the house not having me live with a complete stranger." I started to raise my voice.
"I'm sorry is there some sort of issue?" The guy interfered.
"Yes!"
"No! Can you give me and my daughter one second to sort this out please?" she pleaded to the guy.
The man walked away towards the front of the house. I watched him for a bit until I slowly turned back to my mother giving her a stern look waiting on her excuses.
"Lila, look! This way you'll make money with a roof over your head, and out of mine." she gestured while raising her voice.
"Mom! You don't even know this man! I don't even know this man! You're practically giving me away!" I raised my voice louder.
"That's not true! He's a member of some famous band, my girlfriends told me! Plus we've talked and I checked out the house! Lila think about it hun....just think about it, I''l even give you 70, 30 of the profit." She pleaded.
I tilted my head back as I ran my hands through my hair when the mans shoes against the hardwood floor come closer towards us.
"Everything sorted?" he smiled, clapping his hands together once smiling like a whole creep.
My mom turned towards me looking emotional and I had to think in the moment. The money was good, I would have my own place...maybe. I see the guy is slightly turning red while I nervously think it over.
"What about my things?" I turned to my mom.
"Everything is on the way. I'm having John and Brent help me move you out while you're here." She sassily said.
"Mom! How-, okay fine! I'll take the job!" I inhaled while extending my arm out for a handshake.
He reached his hand out to shake it back. His hand was a bit sweaty and his grip, man was he trying to shake my hand or pull my arm out of place?
"Awesome! Lila, I'll show you upstairs to your room and explain all that needs to be done, cool?" He smiled a bit.
"Sounds good." I half smiled.
"Well I have to meet up with some more employees and your lovely band mates now that this is sorted. Nice seeing you again and Lila, call me later." she walked out heading towards the front door and the guy followed behind her and then I followed behind him.
After my mom left me and the guy headed upstairs to see how my room was looking. It was so spacious I was left in shock, the room had a beautiful terrace that came with a gorgeous view, pearl painted walls, detailed hardwood floors, and best of all a new beautiful bed.
"Um, I never got your name. Can't expect me to call you sir the whole time." I tried laughing it off but in all honesty I was being pretty serious.
"Ashton. My name's Ashton." he smirked.
