Chapter 13 - Katrina Vs. Derek

"What do you say to a three on three battle?" Derek asked as we stood just outside of the Pokemon Center.

Were we even aloud to battle here? I thought. "Sure," I nodded. I hadn't ever battled in the dark before, this would be interesting. We were only provided with the light of the street lamps, & the lights outside of the Pokemon Center, it was pretty dark. I could barely make out Derek as he pulled out a Pokeball.

"I'll pick first. You are rookie trainers, after all. It would be unfair for us to sent our Pokemon out at the same time," he huffed cockily. Oh boy. This guy was just as cocky as Brandon, if that was even possible.

I rolled my eyes as he released a Pokemon called Luxio. From the Sinnoh region. The Luxio growled at me angrily & readied himself for the battle. This Luxio was strong, no doubt about it. I fiddled with my Pokeballs, trying to decide who to use. I chose Venus, because electric-type moves were not very effective against grass-types.

"You may have a type advantage, but that still won't help you," Derek chuckled. "Luxio, let's start this off with Spark!" The male Luxio ran towards Venus, surrounded by sparks of electricity. Venus could not dodge, he was not fast enough. "Venus, use-" Before I could speak, Luxio slammed into Venus, sending him tumbling backwards. He cried out, but then straightened himself up, ready to battle.

"Use Sleep Powder!" Venus released a powdery substance at my command. Luxio was able to dodge it fairly well, but he did inhale some of the powder. He yawned a bit, but shook it off. "Tackle!"

While Luxio shook his head, trying to ignore the sudden drowziness that came over him, Venus tackled him. "Leech Seed!" The move did not fail to attach a small, energy draining seed on Luxio's fur. "Come on Luxio! Use Thunder Fang!" Luxio raced towards Venus, biting down on him with his powerful jaws. "Use Fire Fang." I was almost certain that Derek was smirking evily as he said this. Venus was hurt horridly by Fire Fang, & in no conditiom to continue battling.

Before he became unconcious, I retreated him. "You win that round," I told Derek. "I know," he replied. He retreated his Luxio & pulled out a second Pokeball. This time a bird emerged from the Pokeball, it was Staravia, which was also native to Sinnoh. I already knew who I was going to use for this battle.

"Phantom!" I yelled his name & let him loose. Phantom hovered around playfully. He was in his element, the dark. "Phantom, use Sucker Punch." I smirked as Phantom seemed to disapear into the night. "Staravia! Don't let it catch you off guard!" Derek yelled.

Even I didn't know where Phantom was. He snuck up behind Starvia & punched her hard. She fell down to the ground. "Thunderbolt." She was then struck by a strong lightening bolt. "Staravia! Get up!" Derek cried.

"Psychic." Phantom lifted her into the air, then tossed her at Derek's feet. She was out. I felt bad to hurt other Pokemon, but if I didn't, mine would suffer, & I wouldn't allow that to happen. Phantom won without a scratch of damage on him. He did have the advantage though, because he knew Thunderbolt & because Staravia's normal-type moves didn't do any damage.

Derek retreated his Staravia & mumbled,"You got lucky." He sent out Piplup, a small penguin Pokemon also from Sinnoh. Amber & Charcoal were at a disadvantage, so I let out Relic.

"Alright Relic, let's start with Mud Shot." Relic blasted dirty mud at Piplup. The penguin fell & hoisted itself up, then glared at Relic angrily. "Bubblebeam Penny!" The Piplup, who I'm assuming was named Penny, blasted bubbles at Relic, who did not dodge the move, obviously.

He was much too slow.

"Absorb!" Relic absorbed some of Piplup's energy, & restored his own. "Use Ice Beam!" This Pokemon was taught Ice Beam by TM, I thought to myself before I told Relic to counter it with Mud Shot. Ice Beam proved to stronger, & blasted him.

My fossil Pokemon was not very injured by this attack, since he was both a water & rock-type. "Use Peck!" I saw Piplup running towards us. "Mud Shot! Quick!" Just as she was about to peck into his shell, Relic shot out a powerful Mud Shot & sent Penny flying. She hit a tree, hard. Angrily, Derek retreated her.

"Beginner's luck. You had a type advantage," he huffed at me before walking off. "What's his problem?" I asked Brandon. "He takes losing very seriously," Brandon explained to me. "Hey, I missed you." His words suprised me. I blushed & felt myself smile. "Yeah?" I asked. "Yeah, I really did, Katrina. & by the way, I like your new Haunter. Phantom right?" he smiled. "Yeah." "I caught a new Pokemon too. He's pretty cool. You'll meet him when we get to our room, deal?" I smiled. "Deal."

I healed my Pokemon, then went to the room that me, Brandon, & Derek were sharing. Brandon & I took the bunk bed to the left, & Derek took the one to the right. His team of six Pokemon were laying in the room.

"You're from Sinnoh aren't you?" I asked him. He sneered at me. "Obviously. I got my first three badges from Sinnoh, then I came over here to visit a friend." "Where does your friend live?" Brandon asked. "In Saffron City. I'm heading over there, tomorrow." I looked at Derek's team.

A Piplup, Luxio, Staravia, Skorupi, Sandshrew, & a Persian. We released our Pokemon too, & it was crowded in there. Brandon had the bottom bunk bed, I had the top. I could not sleep because all the Pokemon were wide awake.

Relic & Brandon's Anorith were pretty much the only calm ones, along with Charcoal, who was sleeping. Venus was going through Derek's backpack of personal belongings. He brought me a small wrapper & tilted his head to the side, as if asking, 'What's this'? I looked at the condom wrapper & dropped it on the floor.

"Gross! Derek! Why do you have this?" I made a face. He got up & quickly snatched it. "To get laid! Why else? Tell your Bulbasaur to stop snooping around my stuff," he snapped.

Vulpix & Growlithe, after having been seperated for such a long time, were all over each other cuddling together & licking each other. Brandon's Squirtle was playing with Derek's Piplup, & a Poliwag? "Is that your new Pokemon?" I asked Brandon. He nodded. "Yup," he said, popping the 'p'.

Phantom was going around messing with Derek's Pokemon, scaring them. But I knew he meant no harm. He was just like that, he enjoyed scaring others & laughing about it.

Eventually the Pokemon got tired & slept. A familiar blob of darkness cuddled beside me, Phantom. I draped my arm around him & we slept comfortably.
