Chapter Twenty

Madeline's POV

"Would you like to try again?" I looked up to find Niall's hopeful eyes, as he stared at me from my door. "I gave him a little animal blood to tide him over for a while. It's probably the best time to see him. We need to talk to him everyday, until he gets his humanity back."

"Okay then, let's go." I replied to Niall's question.

He led me back down those dark flights of stairs until we reached the familiar vault door. The echoes from our feet bounced loudly around the room, mixing with the sound of my shakey breath, giving the room an eerie feeling.

Niall stepped forward to open the door while I hugged myself feeling small and threatened. The dark grey walls of the room gloomed over me, I hadn't really looked around the room before but now that I had, it made me feel all the more anxious to leave. But I had to stay strong for Liam. It's my fault he is the way he is now, so it's my responsibility to bring him back.

"Madeline?" Niall questioned, pulling me away from my thoughts.

I stumbled forward, my shoes scuffing on the concrete floor. I carefully stepped through the vault door as I looked for his ruffled hair.

He sat up against the wall at the back, a smirk on his face as he watched my every move, his eyes looking over me as I moved toward his caged prison.

"So this is going to be a daily thing, then?" Liam looked at me his face blank apart from his concrete smirk.

"It depends. Switch your humanity back on, Liam." Niall spoke harshly.

"Not gonna happen. You think some old memories and some sappy love speech is gonna get him back. You're sorely mistaken." He looked from Niall then to me.

My mouth fell agape. He's like a whole other person, hell he is a whole other person. But I have to get the real Liam back.

"Look, Liam, I can't let you be this person. I won't. So no matter how long it takes I will get the real you back."

"How do you know this isn't the real me?"

"Because I know you Liam."

"Really? How well do you actually know me? What's my mum's name?" My head fell to the ground. "Where am I from? When was I born?" I looked back up to him. "My middle name?" My head instantly fell back to the ground ashamed of knowing none of the answers. "I guess you didn't know me as well as you thought you did. Heh."

"I might not know those things yet but I'll tell you one thing I do know, and deep down I know you feel the same way. No matter what we go through, no matter who tries to get in between us, I will always love you. Liam I am totally in love with you."

He was still smirking, but I could see his expression change in those brown glowing eyes of his and soon the smirk faded too. His head fell and all I could see was the small tremble of his lip. When he finally looked back up at me his eyes were covered with water, glassy even in the dim light.

"I bit you. I was sure I killed you. This guilt. It's consuming. Me. I am so sorry, Maddy." A tear slid over his right cheek and dropped to the floor.

"Liam? It's okay everything's fine now. You're back, that's all that matters. Niall, open the door?"

"Uhh. Sure." Niall's hand reached into his back pocket.

He walked over the barred door as he fumbled with the key. Carefully unlocking the door, making sure not to touch the metal of the cage, as it would surely burn his skin.

Niall slowly stepped in and I rushed after him collapsing to my knees next to Liam. I pulled him into the tightest hug I've ever given, his head resting on my shoulder he slowly wrapped his hands around my back.

"I'm so sorry, Maddy. I didn't mean for any of that to happen. I just wish I didn't have to worry about him coming out." He unburied his head from my shoulder and looked at Niall. "How long have I been down here?"

"Just under a week." Niall replied swiftly.

"Wow. Thank you, Maddy." Liam said as Niall and I helped him to his feet. We began to help him to the door, "it's okay, you don't have to help. I'm fine."

We let him go as we all walked through the cage door. Niall happily closed the vault door and sealed it shut.
