      BEFORE LILAC COULD EVEN
answer my question, she took off running out of the room. I sat there in confusion, attempting to compose myself after what we had just did, getting up very slowly so I didn't end up passing out for the second time today.

When I hurriedly made my way to Dove's room, I heard a large commotion and saw Lilac being shoved outside, her eyes wide with panic.

"What's happening to her?!" She shouted to one of the doctors. I felt my blood run cold, watching the doctors and nurses run in and out of the room.

"Septic shock. Her organs are failing—we need to take her to the emergency room. Are you her legal guardian?" The doctor asked Lilac, who stood there, completely frozen.

Lilac's mouth dropped open, stammering before she saying, "yes."

I nudged the women, furrowing my eyebrows deeply. "Lilac—"

"Her parents aren't even here, Spencer. And they don't even want to be. What the hell am I supposed to do?" She asked me sharply, her fists clenching when she saw the doctors roll the gurney out of the room. "Dove!" Lilac called out in a panicked voice at the young girl laying on the bed.

Dove weakly glanced up at Lilac, her eyes sad and droopy. "I saw him." She croaked out, her lips trembling and going blue. "He's here, Lilac." She whispered.

"I-I know. He's not going to hurt you, I promise." She said quickly, following the doctors.

"You said he'd never find me again." Dove breathed out, her chest beginning to heave as it got more difficult to breathe. The girl's eyes went teary and she flashed Lilac a glare. "You lied to me."

"I'm sorry, Dove. I'm so sorry—but he's not going to hurt you! I promise you that—look, you're going into surgery, but we'll talk later, yeah?" Lilac asked quickly, grabbing the girl's hand and squeezing it. "Y-you'll be okay."

"You're lying." Dove croaked out, letting out a cough.

"I'm not lying! You'll be fine—"

"Miss, she needs to go into surgery. Please get out of the way." The doctor told the woman, and Lilac nodded frantically, backing off and letting the doctors wheel her down the hall.

I didn't know what to do, my heart clenching with sadness as I saw the woman panic next to me. She didn't deserve this—neither of them did.
