Chapter 14

Ren:

“Goddammit!” I yelled as I fell into the water again.

Dominique laughed. “It’s called standing, ever heard of it?”

“Standing? That’s so overrated?” I shoved my hair out of my face and just sat there in the water.

          “Okay,” she said slowly.

When she got another fish almost effortlessly, I glared at her. “You cheat.”

          “No, I don’t.”

I stuck my tongue out at her. “Well then, since you are a master fisherman, you can handle this without me,” I muttered then got up- slowly- and started to walk back to the shore.

“Yeah, go and cuddle next to Ian and make him pound your body!” She laughed and I heard the water move and I knew she was doing a little dance.

I froze and turned around to glare at her. “Shut up,” I growled, “I don’t like him. He’s an asshole and a player, nothing more.”

“Mhm.” That was both doubtful and joyful. “Sure.” That was just wicked amusement. She winked at me and started to dance again.

          “I hate you.”

When I got back to the shore, the guys looked up in making the fire. Aiden raised an eyebrow. “What was that all about?”

“You’re girlfriend is pissing me off- and no, not my friend, your girlfriend.”

He chuckled. “Oh joy.” He smirked and got up and went out to where Dominique was still looking for fish without saying another word.

I sat down on the opposite of the tiny, but growing, fire than Ian but the second that I sat down, he slid over by me. “So what did she say to take you so mad?” he asked slowly, as if he was afraid to make me angrier than I was.

With him, that wasn’t so hard. “She said something that wasn’t true and is never going to happen. In other words, she is being an idiot.”

He lifted his hand but then caught himself and set it back down. “Like what did she say?”

I ignored that. We just sat there, staring at the fire.

          “Ren- I- uh-”

I looked over at him. “Yeah?”

He opened his mouth and then a pained look crossed his face and he shut it again. “Uh,” he looked away, “nothing.”

I considered him for a long moment. “Who are you and what have you done with the Ian that we all know and hate? This whole humble thing is a little disconcert ing.”

“Well it fells discocerming, or whatever it is you said. I… well… uh…” He groaned. “Okay, I suck at apologies, but-”

“No,” I interrupted. “Don’t even say it, there’s nothing that you can say to make what you did alright.”

He closed his eyes like he was in pain. “Ren, just let me say this. You can hate me all you want afterwards but at least let me try to explain myself.”
