Prologue:

Felicite's POV

I know I'm different. It became very clear when I was ten. I'm different, quite different. I thought everything was fine until I asked my parents about a pain in my back. When I showed them they gasped and started talking quietly between themselves. I wasn't being included in the discussion so I found a mirror and tried to get a good view of it myslef.

There were two gold spots right between my shoulder blades, one on each side. While I was fascinated, my parents were freaked out. They didn't know what to do. They wanted to take me to the doctor but they weren't one hundred percent sure. I think they were worried that I'd be taken away or something if they did. It's good they didn't, because over the next few days that pain in my back got gradually worse and I'd definitely become some science freak.

As the pain increased, my back took on a strange texture, like there was something under my skin. Of course,  I told my parents it was all fine, and that the lumps and pain had gone away. Even my ten year-old self knew that what I was experiencing wasn't normal.

One day, when the pain had decreased slightly, I was examining my back in the mirror. After concluding that the weird rash-like lumps hadn't got any better, I just closed my eyes and let out an exasperated sigh. Suddenly, the pain seemed to fade away as if it had never been there. I frowned, before opening my eyes to take another look at my back. I let out a shriek at what I saw, before whipping my hand up to cover my mouth. I let my jaw drop as I examined two golden wings that had appeared from my back. They were thinner than paper, and slightly transparent. But above everything, they were beautiful! I brought my hand gently around to touch them softly, they looked fragile enough to shatter at even the slightest touch. They were so soft and delicate and felt like silk. I jumped in fright as my dad banged on the bathroom door. "Felicite, you okay in there?"

"Yes, I'm fine" I replied quickly.

"You sure, I thought I heard a scream."

"Yep, totally, completely fine!"

"Okay, well, dinner is in a few minutes, so hurry up in there."

"I'll be out in a sec"

I let out a deep breath as I heard him walking away. How do I hide these? I can't just casually walk out with wings attached to my back! I take a deep breath, and tell myself to calm down. I'll just pull a loose t-shirt on over the top, no one will notice. I hope. I gently wrap myself in a towel, taking care of my wings in the process. I pull open the bathroom door and tip toe unnoticed to by bedroom, where I grab a loose shirt out of the draw. I gently slip it on over top of my wings, jiggling my shoulders until it sits comfortably. I take a deep breath before starting down the hall towards dinner.

I managed to keep my wings a secret for all of three days. During breakfast on the third morning, I knew something was up when my parents both came and sat on either side of me. They do that whenever they want to have an 'important' talk with me. My heart started pounding as I worried that they had somehow found out.

"Cece, you know that you can tell us anything, right honey?" my mum asked gently, using my nickname.

"Yep" I replied, trying to remain calm.

"Yes, you shouldn't be afraid to tell us anything" my dad parroted.

"Yep, I know, why?"

"We're just concerned, you've been very quiet the last few days, and that's not like you at all." mum prompted.

"I've just been feeling a bit sick, that's all. Everything's fine!"

"Is it your back again?' mum asked at the same time dad said "I said we should've had your back checked out!"
