Chapter 2
Felicite's POV
After navigating the halls together for a couple of minutes, we were forced to separate as our classes were in different areas of the school. I managed to make my way onto the field about a second before the bell rang, allowing me to breathe a sigh of relief. Probably not the best impression for me to be late on my first day of the year! I wandered over to my new classmates, recognising almost all of them, but knowing only a few of their names from my classes last year. I walked up to stand beside someone I recognised, mainly so I wouldn't look like that one loner who has no friends.
We waited patiently for the teacher to arrive for the first few minutes, but after a while some people got worried, and some started suggesting that we bunk this class since the teacher hadn't shown up. I looked around a few times, starting to feel a bit restless myself. In the end I gave up and leant against a stone pillar. I rested my head back against the cold rock, and quickly proceeded to let out a loud yelp. There, hovering barely an inch above our heads was our teacher, looking thoroughly amused. The other students instinctively looked my way following my yelp, and then proceeded to look up at what I was staring at. This caused half of them to flinch back in shock, and half to double over laughing.
"I was beginning to think that I might have had to stay up here for the entire lesson!" She joked, before floating slowly down until her feet rested firmly on the ground. "Now," she clapped her hands, "The first thing you should take note of, mainly for the girls, is that I strongly recommend that you do not wear dresses or skirts during our lessons." This prompted a few awkward laughs from the girls and some sniggers from the guys.
One male voice that I didn't recognise shouted "But feel free too!" This earned him a glare from our new teacher.
"Anyway, I am Miss Stevens, and I'll be guiding you through your grade one flying lessons. So, without further ado, let's get started!" she suggests. I have a feeling she may be one of my favourite teachers this year!
"Okay, so I trust that you have all done a bit of reading from the book you were supposed to get during the break?"
We were supposed to read it?! I read the title! Does that count? From the looks on the faces of my fellow classmates, everyone else was also panicking.
"I'm just kidding, don't look so worried! I don't give homework during the holidays, but feel free to practice your flying. But please wait until you are proficient enough to not kill yourself unsupervised." Thank goodness! I was seriously about to have a heart attack! Failing my first class on the first day? Not good.
"So, can I get you all into a line, far enough away from your neighbours that you aren't able to touch them? We don't want anyone falling out of the sky and crushing someone."
We all moved as she asked, meanwhile sharing looks with our eyes. Some people looked as if they were thinking 'Is she for real?' but most looked pretty relaxed with our teacher's attitude.
"Good, now, today we will just work on getting slightly off the ground. I know that doesn't sound like a lot, but flying is a hard skill to master. Now, when it comes to flying, there are different ways to do it. Your preferable method will probably depend on how strong your power is, but just do whatever works for you. Some will be able to just think about rising, and do it, whereas some may have to think, mouth, or even speak the word 'surgere', which means rise. Some will be able to just feel it inside of you, and move from there. I can't explain that, because it's not the method I use, but trust me, you'll know if you're able to do it. It's quite rare though, so don't get your hopes up. I'm going to start at one end of the line, and come to each of you individually, so please don't attempt to rise on your own, we don't want you going up and up and up!" As she walked to the opposite end of the line, I sighed. I was on the end, so I hope she might come to my end first. But nope, guess I'm last!
