Felicitie's POV
The week leading up to the dance blurred by so fast that if I hadn't known better, I would have suspected that there was some supernatural that was meddling with the flow of time. Despite the panicked process everyone had to go through trying to find something to wear within a week, and without leaving campus, I had somehow come out the other side of it alive. I'd found my outfit online, it was a stunning white skirt that was longer in the back than the front which a paired with a deep, red, strapless boob tube style top. The top was rather tight, but in a flattering way instead of a dodgy way and showed a small portion of my stomach. The top rested bellow my wings and therefore they weren't crushed. I hoped the deep red colour of the top would compliment the bright gold of my wings and eyes.
Connor and Ryder had successfully asked their potential mates to the dance, and Keegan had invited Louisa. The latter had been a shock to me when she first announced it, but the longer I thought about it, the more sense it made. They'd been spending a lot of time together working on the history project, and for some reason they seemed unable to work on it around other people, and so had spent a lot of time alone God knows where. Although I was a tad suspicious of why Keegan had to be completely alone with Louisa so much, I was glad she was happy. She always came back in a great mood, despite having the constant threat of A.L.I.C.E hanging over our heads.
On the note of Lou and Keegan, they were supposed to be back ten minutes ago. I had agreed to meet them in the office, where we were picking up the tickets that would allow us to enter the dance tonight. I was sitting on a bench outside with five layers of clothing between me and the cold outside world. Winter had decided to turn up on time this year, instead of a few weeks late like it did most years. I had been forced to trap even my wings within my jacket, their silky texture being too delicate to withstand the frosty temperatures. I really needed to remember the heating charm I was taught back in 1st year.
I glanced down at my phone, a smile dancing across my face when I saw another text from Carter. The only reason I hadn't given up on Louisa and Keegan, and picked up the tickets myself was Carter, he was entertaining me with cute texts every few minutes. I'm sure the conversation would have been going faster if I could reply properly, but my frozen fingers were proving to be very bad typing instruments. I wasn't seeing him until 6pm tonight, when we had planned for he and Keegan to arrive at our dorm. The dance didn't start until 7pm, but we had organised it so we had time for some photos, to meet up with Connor, Rory and their dates, as well as two of Carter's other friends.
But we would have no time to spare if Louisa and Keegan never turned up! Where were they? Louisa seemed allergic to her phone when she was in his company, and never even noticed the texts I sent her, so there was nothing I could do but wait.
Eventually I heard two voices, and recognised one of them as belonging to my supposed best friend. Finally. And I only had to lose half of my body to frostbite.
As they rounded the corner and came into my line of sight, I immediately sensed that something was off. If it was, Louisa seemed oblivious, smiling and chatting away to Keegan like there was no tomorrow. Keegan on the other hand, banished his smile from his face whenever Louisa wasn't looking. It wasn't replaced with anything that made me immediately concerned for Louisa, but rather with a look identical to what I had seen in the hospital just over week ago. It was the overall lack of emotion that threw me, but behind that there seemed to be a hint of guilt and regret. But for what? At the hospital I had put it down to him feeling guilty about Lou being hurt in the explosion, even though he couldn't have prevented that. But now... I don't know.
As soon as Keegan saw me waiting, his expression was immediately replaced by the same cheerful grin that I now realise I'd been fooled by for the last few months.
