Chapter.2

Rachel.

'Scalpel'.

I was offered one with trembling fingers.All the other hands around the table were shaking vigorously except for mine.The person who lay before me was the CEO of a multinational company and an important political figure too.I didn't mind the personality or status quo of the person lying helplessly at my mercy! For me, he mattered just as any other patient of mine.

It took nearly four hours for the heart transplantation since he didn't have a VAD, it took barely four hours.

Thanking my supporting crew, I headed for washing my hands off. Even though my hands were stained with bloody blood, I had the satisfaction of saving a life which added to my laurels and my promotion.

Getting out of the theater I ran into my best friend, Dr.Savio. Savio was waiting for me in my cabin to congratulate me on my promotion as the head of my team! As usual he just threw his arms around me and lifted me off my feet.
Savio was twenty eight,quite handsome for his age. He had green eyes,with thick eyebrows, the thick beard just added to his peach complexion. Even though I had an impressive height of 5'8 which is above average for any woman he towered over me with a massive height of 6 feet. Women couldn't help themselves but stare at him. But for me he was my bestest buddy!

Even though Savio tried to show his feelings for me on his last birthday, I didn't reciprocate much and just brushed off his thoughts by telling that I just wanted an unconditional and unbiased love without any terms or boundaries ..... Friendship!

Even after that we managed to hit it out so well that our friendship just grew day by day!

"Let's discuss it over a cup of coffee."
Savio threw his flirtatious smile at me which as usual I couldn't deny.

"Tell me Miss wonder,how do you always make it work? Is it with the cheeky smile of yours that nobody can help but just simply fall for ya...even your superiors!!" Savio said after taking a sip from his cappuccino.

"The name says it all Mr.flatterer."
Savio was very good at flattering and it was he who always lifted my low spirits.

Suddenly we were interrupted by the beeping of my phone. My lips itself turned into a curve on seeing the call.

"Honey,do you realize that it has been one whole day since you have called your ailing mom?"said my mom mockingly.

"Since you are Mrs.Thomas and with the added bonus of being my mom I
know my mom can never be an ailing lady." I just snapped at my mom. My mum is very enthusiastic and leaves no page unturned to ensure that her family too stays with that kind of a vibe. It was the determination of my mom that I left my broken past,even though I am clinging to some of it.

"So when are you planning to make mama happy by showing up with your fiance?" I saw this topic coming up. Like any other Indian mom she too was eagerly waiting for the day when she could happily see her daughter walk down the aisle of the church holding her dad's hand.

"Mom please! We have talked about this! Not now, not even later! But I'll assure you I won't be following celibacy the whole of my life. Let the right guy at the right time and that too with a diamond ring show up. Nothing less, nothing more." I chuckled.

I could hear my mom sigh on the other end. Mrs Amy Thomas was a highly respected lady in the society,she never cared what others thought or talked about her behind her back. She acted what her heart told her to do and was a highly respected philanthropist. Even she persuaded her two kids to do the the same. My father invested a lot of faith in my mom and always took time to listen to her before any of his business ventures! She was impulsive at times but all her impulsive ventures resulted in success.

"Mom, give me time. Trust me, if moving on would have been that easy I would have been with another guy right now. Love cannot be replaced easily. At one moment the person whom you adore is head over heels in love with you and promises to be by your side till the very end of the age. And the very next moment, he abandons you with your dreams shattered and you bewildered. Believe me mom, I am doing my best." I said to my mom with a teary eye looking at the diamond ring still on my ring finger.

Furthur the convo didn't go as expected and it was cut short.

Wiping away my tears using the back of my hand I returned to the table,to find my besties from college, Dr.Samantha Campbell and Dr.Mia Butler. Sam, Mia, Savio and I myself have been good friends since college days and even managed to get into the same hospital. Our friendship was the only thing that held me back in San Francisco even after David's departure from my life and this world.

"Hey girl, this promotion calls for celebration." Sam came to hug me.

"Sam I am really not in a mood,let's do it some other day."

"Did your mom call?" Sam cocked an eyebrow.

I was taken back by her deduction which was right! They always knew when I was down and the reason behind it. After explaining the mom episode they all sighed.

"No way honey. You always come up with one reason or the other. This time there is no escape for you." Mia frowned

After much of the persuasion I agreed.
"But where to?", was the only question that left out of my mouth.

"Let's go to sugar trap,the most famous and hottest pub in SF. I am sure Rach, you can easily come with the guy of your choice and break several other hearts",winked Sam at me.

"Let's break some hearts with your cheesy smile and sensual swags." Savio said from the other end of the table.

"Dress sexy and be ready to set the dance floor on fire"

"I am the definition of sexy and I am gonna break hearts tonight" I said pouting my lips.
