Chapter 11. Amy's Continuing Recovery

The Next day Ty was back at work and already he was missing Amy. Lou had to go to Maggie's and asked Amy if she wanted to go so she could spend time looking at shops and going to the park as it was such a nice day and would be a change of scenery.
Amy agreed and suggested Lou drive her Truck as the chair would be easier going in the back.
Lou and Amy arrived at Maggie's rear parking area and Lou got the chair down the ramp for Amy.
Amy said she'd come in for a coffee first before looking at the shops.
Lou had planned it, because as Amy wheeled in she had to do a double take when she saw Her best friend sat at a table smiling.
"OMG , Soraya." There was hugging and crying,  they were so pleased to see each other  especially as Soraya lived in England. They spent ages talking then went Shopping.  And to the park.
Soraya was surprised to see Amy using her crutches when they went in the shops and Amy explained that she has to increase the walking every week to help her muscles,  so eventually she won't need the little chair just the 4X4 around the Ranch. But things were improving.
Soraya asked Amy about a trail ride, so Amy told Soraya that she still can't ride but She can go with her on her outdoor Chair,  arrangements were made for 2 days time as she had Hospital appointments  tomorrow.

The next day Amy, Ty, Jack and Lou were waiting for Dr Hammond, Amy had been down for an MRI earlier.
An hour later they were called in to  see Dr Hammond, Amy wanted her family with her for support and so she didn't have to repeat it all to them .
Dr Hammond was very pleased with the results and told Amy they were going to remove the large Corset and support frame and replace it with a smaller light weight Corset that she can take off at night and for showering as long as someone was with her to give her support if needed. Amy and Lou started giggling and Ty's face went very red. Even Jack chuckled and patted Ty on the back. It had been 3 months since the Corset was fitted and Amy's spine was Healing well.
Dr Hammond said that he reckoned the Corset could come off completely in another 2 months as long as Amy continued with her exercises to strengthen her back muscles.
Amy was really pleased.

The next day day Soraya and Amy went on the Trail ride and ended up at the ridge.  Soraya was talking to Amy but she was miles away, Earth to Amy, Oh sorry, was just thinking back a month ago when me and Ty came up here . Ahh that's why your blushing said Soraya.  Amy looked down then back up to Soraya with that smirk on her face, well it had been a long time Amy said , and they both burst out laughing.

The following week Soraya went back to England.
Everyone noticed how good Amy was, Ty was helping amy with her exercises and she was now brushing down the horses and keeping herself busy. She asked Lou if they could start planning the Wedding and got Ty involved as well.
The next two months went by quickly and they were back at the Hospital.  Dr Hammond called Amy and Ty in to his office, he asked Amy to lift up her top and proceeded to undo the Corset  then took it off saying that she no longer needed it.
She burst into tears because she was Happy to finally be free of it. He told her to try and walk when possible but if they were on a long trip to use the chair as he didn't want her to over do it. It was her choice as she knew her own body and what she was capable of. Dr Hammond said that he would see her in another 3 months  but he was very pleased.
Just as they were about to leave he said to Amy she could start riding again as long as it was gentle,  nothing  strenuous.  Amy gave him a big smile and a kiss on his cheek saying Thank you.

The weekend came and Amy and Ty went for a Trail Ride on the horses,  Amy hadn't stopped smiling since they set off. They ended up under the willow tree again except this time Amy had no Corset to worry about and she decided that Ty was going to get the full works this time maybe even twice. It was a hot day and being under the Willow tree meant they got a bit of a cool breeze which they needed as they were both very aroused and couldn't keep there hands off each other.
They were both laying there completely naked unseen and Amy did indeed get Ty to perform twice which she really needed.
They got dressed and made there way back to Heartland holding hands,  it was so nice to be back on Spartan and Amy felt comfortable,  no twinges or pain.
Wedding plans were going well and her 3 months was nearly up just 2 weeks to go before she sees Dr Hammond again.
Ty got up for work and noticed Amy didn't look very well so told her to stay in bed.
He told Lou as he was leaving for work and she said she'd keep an eye on her.
Lou popped in to see how Amy was and noticed she was sweating and didn't look good, Amy was complaining of a headache too. Lou went and got the thermometer and Amy's temperature was dangerously high.  Lou immediately phoned the Hospital and spoke to Dr Hammond,  she explained Amy's symptoms and temperature.
Dr Hammond said he was dispatching  an Ambulance straight away as it sounds like Amy may have a Spinal Infection.  Lou was trying to cool Amy down  with ice water and a flannel.
Lou phoned the Clinic.
"Ty, " Scott answers and tells Lou that Ty is out on a call.
"Okay, scott you need to inform Ty that Amy is seriously ill with a Spinal infection.  I'm just waiting for an Ambulance that's being sent by Dr Hammond who performed the Operation on Amy's broken back.  Thanks Scott. "
The Ambulance arrived and they checked Amy out and immediately put an IV line in Amy's arm.
As soon as Amy was in the Hospital Dr Hammond  took over, Blood tests to find out what the infection was as there were a few.
By the time Lou, Ty, Jack got to the Hospital Dr Hammond had an answer.  He called them in and asked them to take a seat.
"Amy picked up a virus which entered  her blood stream and traveled to the
Operation site , I've identified the infection,  it's called Vertebral osteomyelitis and we treat it with intravenous antibiotics.  As soon as she's stable and the infection is under control she can go home and stay in bed with antibiotics until its cleared up. We will also put her on a course of Steroids to help.
Lou asked if this infection was serious,  Dr Hammond answered honestly and said Yes it can cause Spinal shock, that's why I sent the Ambulance so quickly so we could start treatment . We should see an improvement in a couple of days.
The Doctor was right and two days later Amy was making progress .
Dr Hammond had an MRI done to see if the infection had damaged the Vertebrae, but the results showed that the quick response by Dr Hammond had prevented any damage. After two weeks Amy was allowed home as long as she stayed in bed for another two weeks and took the Antibiotics and Steroids,  no walking, she would have to use the chair until she got the all clear which could take 12 weeks.
It was a set back but the family will pull together as usual.  Lou felt so sorry for Amy as she seemed to take 2 steps forward and then 1 step backwards.  There was 6 months till the Wedding and Lou hoped it wouldn't get cancelled again . Lou heard a noise and went to see what it might be  but noticed it was coming from Amy and Ty's room, she knocked  but no answer so quietly walked in to see Amy Sobbing,  she sat on the bed and pulled Amy into her and held her.
"What's up Sis"
"Oh Lou, I thought everything was going so well. "
"Well Dr Hammond was glad I phoned  him and not just an Ambulance.
Apparently it's quite rare this infection, he said that in 30 years your the 3rd person to get it after back surgery. And because it was caught early there's no damage. "
"So that's good then, thank you Lou."
"You just do what the Doc says and you'll be fine Amy, now get some
sleep ".
Amy did as Dr Hammond said and she was up and about two weeks later. She had to have a blood test every week at Dr Virani's clinic instead of going all the way to the hospital.
Amy started going to the Gym twice  a week and showed her instructor the picture on her phone of her MRI so he would know where she needed to strengthen her muscles.
Eventually the 12 weeks were up and she was supposed to go and see Dr Hammond but he phoned Amy instead with good news that she was clear of the infection.
6 months had passed since Amy fell out the Loft, the Wheelchairs were  wrapped and stored in the Quonset hut. Amy finally felt back to normal and her and Ty were looking forward to the Wedding in 3 months time.
