I walk back to the house slowly taking in what had just happened. What had Justin meant? He has to know that there is nothing that he can do to make me want to get back with him. Hadn’t I just told him there was basically no chance for us? I walk up the porch steps, and look for Audrey.
Couples line the walls, and the bass of music hammers against the old windows. Skaters gather around the couch passing around a joint. Another couple is in the corner making out. My eyes scan the room and find that Audrey is not there.
I walk into the kitchen and find Audrey pushed up to Kyle. I watch as her hands swim around his back. I see solo cups littered around the floor around them. I begin to walk up to her, but stop myself. I regain my nerve and regain my steps. I lift my hand to tap her shoulder. “Audrey,” I say. I wait for them to pull apart, but they don’t. I tap her shoulder again. She turns her head slightly to the right, opens her eyes and looks at me. My breath catches as I look at her. Her makeup is smeared and her lips are swollen from kissing. Her eyes are blood shot and make me think of the joints in the living room. Kyle kisses her neck making her sigh and close her eyes. “What do you want?” she says through gritted teeth.
“We need to go. Now.” I grab her hand and tug her towards the door leading into the other room. I hear her whisper something into Kyles ear and then reluctantly allows me to pull her through the living room and outside to the porch.
“I can’t believe you was letting him take advantage of you like that.” I say practically yelling it her. She sways a little so I grab her arm. Her eyes begin to close again, and then she falls to the ground. “Oh shit.”
I crumble to the floor, and grab her head in between my hands. “Audrey.” I say. I press two fingers against her neck and feel a steady pulse. “It’s going to be okay. Alright?” I hear her groan and then I try to pull her up. I tug and no luck then there are another set of hands helping me with her. I look over and see Justin.
“Come on. Let’s get her to your car. Where’s it at?”
“It’s over there beside a black jeep.” I say.
We walk down the yard. I stare at my feet watching out for something that I may stumble on. I can’t help but wonder why he is helping me. I can’t help but think that this him trying to keep his promise to me back. I look over at him and he is looking straight into the darkness ahead. The moons glow in on his face and he looks so gorgeous. I can understand why so many girls fall for him. He turns his head sideways as if he can feel my stare. He looks into my eyes with a questioning look. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to be staring. I’m just confused on why you’re helping me.”
He shrugs, “Why wouldn’t I?”
“Don’t answer my question with a question.” He always done this while we were dating. He knows how much it aggravates me.
He laughs, “I know you hate it when I do that, nut in my defense you never actually asked a question. Um, anyways I’m showing you that I care about you. You needed help I was there. I’ll always be there.”
All I can do is stare at him. I have no idea what to say. He’s keeping his promise. Anger threatens to bubble over. He was never there for me. He only cared about himself. “You weren’t always there. Actually, you were never there. I think I can take it from here.” I turn my attention to the cars in front of me and see my car. I have never been so happy to see her.
I begin to walk towards the car, waiting for the impact of Audrey’s full weight. But it never comes. I look over already knowing what I’m going to see. Justin.
“I’m not leaving. I already done that once I’m not doing that again.”
Anger bubbles inside me. “We were already heading down a bad road before you decided you didn’t love me anymore because I wouldn’t have sex with you!” I shout. “I’m so not doing this right now if you want to help me get her to the car fine but then you go.”
He looks like I just slapped him in the face. He lets out a sigh and then we begin to walk.
“You’re persistent I’ll give you that.” I mutter under my breath.
Justin stays silent the rest of the way to the car. I reach into my pocket, and pull out my keys. I unlock the car, and reach to open the passenger door. Justin takes Audrey’s arm from mine. He gently puts her into the car, and closes the door silently.
“I’m sorry about Audrey. Kyle can be a real dick.” He says.
“Yeah, well he probably learned from his friends. Thanks for helping with her.” I say reluctantly.
“You’re welcome. Goodbye Clair.”
“Goodbye.” I slid into the car and leave Justin starring after me
