Gameboy Games

This one-shot is a request from @muddyrockxo with the prompt being about Steps playing gameboy against/with each other, loosely based on the one-shot about them playing football. Enjoy xx

"So what are we going to play?" H asks curiously. Since their football match hadn't turned out how he and his team had wanted it to be, they now were doing something less sportive and are now playing gameboy. The only decision they need to make is, which game to play. H owns plenty of games, loving to play gameboy after rehearsals either alone or with family or friends. Whenever they're abroad or on tour he uses to take his gameboy along too, playing and occasionally annoying the rest of the band - even if Claire mostly joins in playing while the others are out for partying. 

"We could play Mario Kart. It's the only game of yours I'm halfway decent at." Lisa explain, chuckling slightly. When they were on tour once and it had been raining like crazy, they all had stayed in their suite and played gameboy as well. Lisa had attempted to beat H's highscore but realised that apart from Mario Kart she's not overly good at playing these games. 

"Great idea. Hopefully with teams again?" H asks with excitement, already jumping up and down on the couch from being so excited. 

"Sure, otherwise it'll be boring. Just to let you know, me and the girls will win." Lee announces, chuckling while H passes him a controler. "Why am I having the gray controller? That looks boring." he laughs, seeing that H decides on a much friendlier blue. 

"Can I have the yellow controller please?" Faye asks, standing on her tip toes to reach the controller that H is holding over her head. It had become a joke between them to appear taller than Faye since - because she uses to wear high-heels - she appears taller than all of them. "H, come on, no jokes now! Yes, thank you." she smiles when H finally passes her the yellow controller.

"Anyone else got a wish?" he asks into the crowd. 

"Yeah, can I be Mario?" Johnny asks with a grin. "Just a joke, I'll be whoever you want. Let's just start now." 

H grins at his team mate while doing the settings, each of them choosing a character. "So, which cup are we going to do?"

"Special Cup!" Faye says with excitement. "Because there's the Donut road and it's such a cool cup."

"And rainbow road." H adds with a grin, hiding the fact that he isn't the most talented player at Rainbow road either simply because of how difficult it is at some points.

"Oh dear, rainbow road is so difficult!" Claire sighs, agreeing as if she'd heard H's thoughts. "Fun but difficult. But yeah, let's do the Special Cup since Faye and H actually agree on something for once." she adds with a laugh while H confirms the settings. 

"Speaking of Donut Road, why don't we have any snacks?" Lisa asks, focusing on her character. "It's a party, so where are the snacks?"

"I will get the snacks for us all if you're quiet now, deal?" H asks, watching his character starting to drive. "That's mad, why am I last place?" he questions confused, looking at his controller to see if it might needs a change of batteries. 

"H, you're holding the controller upside down." Lisa says, now realising why - except for the teams - the settings were a bit all over the place. "Hey, we're not going to win like that! Just wait for our revenge on Rainbow Road!" she adds, acting all competitive as the others let out a laugh.

"Well, our team is great, isn't it? We're the best!" Claire asks with a smile, followed by a sigh when her kart falls off the road. "Apart from me."

"Oh shush, you're great too." Faye comforts her friend, sighing when her kart isn't moving from its place; accidentally knocking itself against Lee. "Whoops, sorry Lee! I mistook you for H. Well, for his character."

"Hey H, I'm in your team, are you mad?" Lisa complains when H accidentally drives against her kart as well.

"Sorry, Lisa. I haven't played in a while." he jokes. 

"Of course not. You're playing whenever we're on tour." Lisa answers with a slight grin.

"Wait, am I seeing that correctly or is Claire going to win?" H asks instead, acting as if he would be shocked when - in fact - he knows how Claire usually tends to talk herself down even if she's talented at a lot of things.

"She is and she's in our team!" Faye says with a bright smile. "Don't underestimate us, we got Lee too!" she adds, overplaying the fact that she's currently in last place, Lisa not being much better either. "Oh, damn it!" Faye says angrily. 

"Calm down, it's just a game." Claire grins, although she's quite proud of herself for being the best one. She uses to play with H when they're on tour, sometimes joined by Lee and rarely by Faye and Lisa who mostly go to bars instead - so that might be an advantage. "I must admit, it's a lot of fun. Which road is next?"

"Ghost road!" H cheers, tickling Lisa slightly because he knows she isn't fond of anything scary. "It's not scary, Lisa. It's just a game." he grins when seeing her smile dropping slightly. Despite indeed focusing on the game, H's team is worse compared to Lee's team. Claire managed to win this one too, Lee being closely behind. Even Faye managed not to be in last place anymore, slowly understanding the game. Much to H's dismiss he didn't thought his friends would be so good at the game; Johnny is sharing the equal amount of points with Faye though and Lisa placed herself either at the bottom of the leaderboard or somewhere in between. 

"Time for rainbow road." Lee announces amused, seeing the familiar features of that certain road that many find nerve-wracking. It definitely is among the difficulties of the game and now Claire doesn't win either, occasionally swearing. 

"Wow, look at that." H announces, his character recently falling off the road once more. "Our Claire swearing at a game!"

"Yes I am because I keep falling off that stupid road." she complains, accidentally knocking Faye off the road too. "Sorry." she apologises. 

"Don't worry, it doesn't change much. I'm not going near the lead anyways." Faye explains. "But we got Lee for that, don't we?" she asks, noticing that Claire isn't even paying attention because of being so focused on getting to the finish line. 

In the end, none of them wins - although Johnny managed to sneak ridiculously close to the top and guiding his team to victory as Lee's team didn't scored that much points now. 

H jumps up from his seat, doing a small victory dance and almost knocking off the glasses from the table. "I told you we're going to win." he announces proudly. 

"Well, you might won that one but there still are plenty of other cups to do." Lee announces, back into a competitive mode that the others usually only know from him playing football with then. "Which one should we do next?"

"Flower Cup sounds good." Claire says, taking H's controller so the settings wouldn't be all over the place again. "Also, I believe we're running out of snacks." 

"Well, winning at gameboy games makes me hungry." H apologises. "I will arrange something in a minute. First of all, we've got a game to win."
