"What do you mean Elena's not my sister" I asked shocked at what Stefan had just said. I wasn't sure wether to believe him.
"Clara..." Damon began. I know he took this to heart. He wanted to protect me from this, he saw an innocence and goodness that he longed for.
"There is still a lot you don't know about the supernatural world... there are these things called doppelgängers. They basically look like you and exist at the same time you do too" Stefan said.
"So you're telling me that Elena had an evil doppelgänger who you just so happened to fall in love with?" I said not believing any of this.
"Clara, I know it's hard to believe but you really just need to believe us. Now that Elena is dead, that makes Katherine the only other doppelgänger alive..." Stefan said.
"That still doesn't explain how Elena isn't my sister" I argued.
"Well about that, remember that annoying old guy, your uncle John Gilbert?" Damon asked and I nodded. My uncle John had always favored me, he said I had a peculiar mind like he did.
"Yeah well when he was in his younger years, he met this gorgeous girl and well him being the young horny teen he was they slept together only the girl ended up being pregnant... with Elena. Your mom and dad knew the girl was not going to be well taken care of because the mystery momma didn't want anything to do with Elena and John was just a teen, so naturally your dad adopted Elena. Elena's mom was somehow related to Katherine..." Damon explained.
"Which is why I came back to Mystic Falls. I had heard of the newest doppelgänger and every few years I come back home. This time, I went for a walk in the woods and found a car going astray from Wickory Bridge..." Stefan started.
"Wait- you, you were there?" I asked feeling as my eyes began to swell and tears started to run down my eyes.
"Yes Clara, I was." He said and Damon looked down clearly not knowing what to say.
"W-why didn't you save them?!" I said crying. There was a chance, why was I saved and they weren't? It's something I'll never let go, something I'll never forget.
"I tried Clara. I saw your father first and your mom was already dead... your dad told me to get you two girls out of the car and when I went over to see you two, Elena was already dying. I was able to get you both out of the river but... Elena died by the time she was out. I tried giving her vampire blood but it didn't work, she was dead." Stefan said.
