Chapter 2: Memories and Staying By Her Side

"How is she?" I asked Rafiki as he put leaves on Fuli's wounds, "she will be fine. Give her time to rest and heal" Rafiki said with a smile. He walked away to get more medical equipment, I looked at Fuli and just seeing her wounds makes me want to throw up or just strangle someone. "Kion are you ok?" Bunga said walking up to me, "huh? Oh yeah I'm fine" I said shooting him a reassuring smile. "You sure you look sad or even depressed about something" Bunga said putting his hand on my shoulder. "I'm fine Bunga you don't need to worry. What you do need to worry about is who will take over the role of leader of the Lion Guard" I said with a frown.

"You could" Bunga said with a smile, "me? I don't have experience" I said with flat ears, "you have too. It's either that or Ono" Bunga said. I sighed, he was right, no offense Ono but I'm gonna have to lead I thought to myself, "ok, but only until Fuli heals and gets better" I said. "Ok" Bunga said and returned with the rest, I returned my gaze back to Fuli and just seeing her like that makes my heart feel like it's been stomped by a herd of elephants. "We're going to leave you be and we'll check in later" my dad said and the rest left. "Ok I'll be right with you I just need to do something first" I said to the group.

"Ok brother don't take to long" Kiara said with a smile and left, I returned my look to Fuli and felt my eyes tear up. I just let them fall, no point in holding them back, I nudged Fuli's head and said. "Please Fuli wake up, you need to, even though I just met you after losing my memory I can't imagine a world without you. We need you. To be a leader" I said. A throbbing pain shot through my head again like before at the Watering Hole. A scene played back in my head...

I was at the Watering Hole in the middle of the night not getting any sleep so I decided that maybe walking would make me tired but nope. When I looked into the water I found a silhouette of a certain animal, an animal known as Fuli. Seeing her always made me smile and always know that hope was always in the dark. "Hey Fuli" I said walking up to her, "oh hey Kion what are you doing here?" Fuli said tilting her head to the side. "I couldn't sleep so I decided to come here to tire myself out" I said with a smile. She chuckled and we locked eyes, when we did it was like looking into a whole new world. Those emerald green eyes always hypnotizing me making me smile, "uh Kion? Earth to Kion?" Fuli said and I snapped back to the real world.

"Huh? Oh sorry I was deep in thought for a second" I said with a nervous chuckle, "what were you thinking about?" Fuli said taking a step closer. "Doesn't matter, what does matter is that why are you out here?" I asked Fuli, "oh um I- uh, sure you won't make fun of me?" Fuli said. Those words hit me hard, "of course I would never" I said, "ok. I had a nightmare" Fuli said and looked away with low hanging ears. "What's so bad about that?" I said using my paw to make her see me eye to eye, "well it isn't a typical nightmare" Fuli started. "What was it about?" I asked tilting my head to the side.

Well we were on patrol and a bunch of hyenas, and outsider lions surrounded us" Fuli started and she began to tear up. I felt bad so I nuzzled her and said "take as much time as you need to tell me. I'm all ears" I said and she blushed a little and smiled. "Thank you Kion" Fuli said with a smile, it took a few moments for her to regroup and tell me. "Ok well we decided to fight off the lions and hyenas and we were outnumbered. The hyenas were mainly just going after you and when one of us tried to come help you we would get blocked off. When we finally got passed we looked at you and saw you on the ground with a pool of blood surrounding you. You also had scratch marks all over you, we tried to wake you up but you didn't and you didn't breathe. A-a-and when we found out you died I-I" Fuli didn't finish because she started crying.

I was shocked, me ears fell to the sides of my head and my mouth open in shock, I walked up to her and hugged her. She didn't protest against the hug but instead she hugged me back and cried into my chest. I petted her back, "shhh. It's ok, I'm here and I will never leave you" I said as her muffled cries and the chirps of crickets was all I heard. "I know but just the thought of you leaving is just scary and I-I can't imagine a world without you Kion. I just can't" Fuli said and rested her head on my chest and cried more. "Don't worry I'm here. I'm not leaving, truth is I also can't imagine a world without you either" I said and she looked at me her tear staining her fur. She slightly smiled and got an idea and smiled back, "is that a smile I see?" I said with a smirk and she just lightly chuckled.

"Your smiles always had an effect on me Fuli" I said and she looked at me, she blushed a bit and I got an idea. "Hey how about we sleep here tonight" I said and she looked away obviously thinking. "I would like that" Fuli said and I went to the rock I was at and laid down waiting for Fuli. She padded over and laid next to me a few centimeters away from me. I smiled and lowered my head on the stone and was about to fall asleep but felt something snuggle up to me. I opened my left eyes and saw Fuli with her cheerful smile on and I just smiled back.

I entwined our tails and she smiled more, I did something I might regret later but I put my arm around her back and pulled her closer and she just pured in delight. After that it was sweet dreams and had a nice night.

I opened my eyes and looked at Fuli's unconscious body and smiled, I looked at the entrance of the cave and thought to myself and finally decided. I licked Fuli's forhead and she purred in delight, I just noticed this but a scar ran across her heart shaped spot on her forhead. I laid down on the ground facing her and fell asleep almost instantly, I know one thing I will remember.

Fuli will always be safe, and protected as long as I'm around.
