Duality [INFIDGET]

Chapter One: The Beginning

The sky choked up with flames and ash - and the most potent smell of death and decay. The streets were left as battered ruins as cities were evacuated. A small group of four Mobians who were fighting against Eggman and his newly formed army were gathered at the city's centre, fighting a mysterious jackal with a mask who was emitting a soft red glow.

"There is no reason to resist. Your saviour is no more"

The jackal hovered in the air and took out three of the four Mobians left standing, screams rang out as they perished into nothing but dust.
The last one in his group - a red wolf with dark hazel eyes and glasses - crouched low behind a demolished waterfall, cowering in fear as the last of his friends were just murdered in front of him. The wolf seen a gun and rushed to grab it - only to be spotted by the murderer himself.

"I can taste your terror, child. All that anxiety and doubt..." He spat, "It's delicious" The jackal held out his hand and shot at the wolf's feet to knock him to the blood stained concrete. The wolf yelped as he hit the ground, he had no strength to get back up again. Weakly, the wolf looked into death's eye.

"Give into your fear. Flee, screaming, and I'll let you live." The jackal offered slyly.

The wolf watched as the villain cackled in fits of evil laughter, taking his grateful leave, he ran off and sought for temporary refuge where he can gather his bearings.

The jackal, on the other hand, smirked behind his mask and flew off to find and terrorise more helpless civilians.

- At the temporary refuge -

The wolf - formally known as Gadget - sat in the corner of an abandoned hideout, sobbing into his knees. His friends, gone. His family, gone. Everyone he knew was dead, all by that masked jackal.

"Why...why me?" He sobbed, "After everything I have endured, he still tortures me"

Gadget wiped his salty streams of tears and stood up, "I need to be strong." He looked at an old picture of his family and friends, "For them"

Putting his picture back in one of his pockets, he glanced at a poster promoting the Resistance group. Curiously, he grabbed the poster and sprinted to the destination of the Resistance headquarters.

- Resistance HQ -

Gadget reached the headquarters and knocked on the large, steel door. He waited for what seemed like forever when the door finally opened and a red echidna appeared, the echidna looked at Gadget, "Nobody followed you, did they?" He asked sternly, making sure that pesky jackal or Eggman's robots didn't sneak up on them. Gadget held his hands up defensively and repeatedly shook his head, "I-I'm alone! I swear!" He gulped.

The echidna raised an eyebrow for a second but seen the expression on the poor wolf's face and dropped his stern look, "Come in, quickly" He ushered Gadget inside before closing the door and locking it. Gadget looked around the hallway, walking with the echidna, he nervously introduced himself, "Uhm...my n-name's Gadget" He glanced at the other red furred Mobian shyly.

"Knuckles." Knuckles spoke up and turned to the wolf, he then shook his hand. "Pleasure to meet you, Gadget" Knuckles could see the scrawny figure of the wolf and frowned. "You need food, you're skin and bones currently! How long have you been out there?" Knuckle asked and rushed to the supply room to grab a nutrient block and some water, he then gave them to Gadget. Gadget nervously ate half of the block and drank the water before answering, "Since the w-war started..." He mumbled, his stutters implying he was very shy around new Mobians. "I seen a poster promoting your group a-and I wanted to join you..." Gadget looked at Knuckles, his face heating up with embarrassment.
