Chapter Four: Suspicions & Fluffy Boys

"Don't think this is over yet, you blue nuisance!" Eggman shouted as he flew off in his Egg Mobile, retreating the battle.

Sonic cheered, "Yeah! We did it!" He beamed joyfully and fist bumped Gadget. Gadget smiled tiredly and nodded, "We must tell Knuckles about this victory" He commented and regained his breath from the encounter with Eggman. Sonic agreed and both started to walk back to the headquarters, the sun set as they walked - this made Gadget nervous about having to sneak out of the base at night, without getting caught.

- Resistance HQ -

"We have secured another chunk of land guys! Egghead ran off as usual though" Sonic reported to the gang. "And now, I'm going to nap" Sonic sprinted off to his chamber to sleep.

Knuckles nodded, "Alright everybody, time to rest up! Shadow, you're on night duty" He walked off with the gang to their own rooms. Shadow grunted and remained resting on a pillar with his arms crossed, his menacing eyes glanced at Gadget.

Spotting his glance, Gadget rubbed his arm nervously but quickly hurried off to his own room, he sat on his bed and thought. "I need to figure out how to get out of here without Shadow noticing..." He hummed. "If he catches me I'm doomed, and Infinite is gonna be pissed if I don't return..." He rubbed his temples.

Once everyone was in their rooms, Shadow began his night watch, he looked over the cameras that lay outside the base and walked down the hallway occasionally to make sure everyone stayed inside. Shadow made sure he was alert to every noise around him, he knew the threat that Infinite posed with that ruby he possessed. Shadow done a routine walk down the hallway, the time he had alone allowed him to collect his thoughts as this was the only time the headquarters was really quiet.

It was just striking 11PM in the base now, Shadow wasn't tired at all being the "Ultimate Lifeform" he is. It was at this time he heard footsteps, Shadow perked his ears and blocked the exit to prevent the suspected Mobian from escaping.

Gadget sensed Shadow nearby and gulped, he needed to persuade him so he can leave, or else he may never get out of here. Gadget walked up to the looming figure and smiled timidly, "Uhm..I need some fresh air, can I leave?" He asked.

"No." Shadow looked down at the red ball of fur and crossed his arms.

Gadget sighed, "Please? There's no window in my room" He was telling the truth in that, there was no window in his room and it was getting stuffy.

Shadow narrowed his eyes. "How can I trust that you won't run off?"

"I'm not a child, I can take care of myself." He scoffed, "Even if I wanted to run I'd have no where to go, so it's pretty pointless" Gadget shrugged and chuckled.

Shadow hummed, "Fine, but just so you know, I don't trust you yet." He poked Gadget in the chest and unlocked the door for him, it seems that even if Gadget managed to get past Shadow he didn't know the passcode to get out.

Gadget watched him before stepping out to the fresher air and sighed, the moon already rose and small white dots littered the midnight sky, it was a beautiful sight. Shadow watched the wolf, he decided to follow him to make sure he was just getting some "fresh air", and to find out why that wolf was so fidgety around the rest of the gang.

- Mystic Jungle -

Gadget walked around the jungle, he tried to relocate the spot where Infinite told him to be when it was dark - not knowing that a dark hedgehog was following him. Gadget looked around and stopped walking, he was sure this was the spot. Shadow hid behind a nearby tree and watched from afar.
