Chapter Seven: Experimentation

"Zero, I'm scared..."

"It's okay, it won't hurt you"

The jackal brought the ruby over to his lover's chest, the ruby sensed a host and used magic to fuse with Gadgets chest, Gadget himself was terrified at having the ruby permanently fused with his chest but he calmed down when he knew that Zero would never leave his side, they loved eachother after all.

As the ruby connected with Gadgets skin it sent off a brief flash - showing that it had successfully accepted its host and their body. Zero sighed in relief and kissed his lovers forehead, "It's done, the ruby accepted you as its host" he explained and looked at the ruby that was now in Gadgets chest, the ruby was glowing softly, as if reacting to the other active ruby in the jackals chest. This caused both Mobians to look at their ruby's, a very confused jackal was the first to speak.

"Okay, that's new" he chuckled and moved away from the wolf to get two glasses of water, as he done so the ruby's stopped glowing. Gadget noticed first, "Hey, Zero? They've stopped glowing now" he touched his ruby. Zero gave Gadget a glass of cold water and sipped on his own and sat beside the wolf on the sofa, the ruby's started to glow again. "That's very weird, maybe it senses our connection?" he suggested and shrugged, this made the wolf smirk, "Possibly, if so that's adorable, don't you think?" he looked at Zero.

Zero hummed and wrapped an arm around his wolf, "Yeah, it is interesting if that's the case" he nuzzled Gadget, "At least your ruby didn't go haywire when you first connected with it" Zero blurted out and chuckled. Gadget looked at him, "Did it hurt you?" he asked, now concerned and a little worried.

The jackal shook his head, "No, not physically" he avoided Gadgets eyes. "However it did toy with me, I found it very hard to control as anytime I tried to reach for something it shot out the laser blast" he explained. "You could say that mines was a tad bit faulty, but I got it under control eventually" Zero smiled. Gadget gulped softly and looked at his own ruby, this didn't go unnoticed by his lover.

"Hey, it'll be okay, we can practice some magic today" Zero kissed Gadgets cheek and stood up. "You know I wouldn't let anything harm you" Zero looked at the smaller Mobian and held out his hand, "Come, let's get some target practice up above"

Gadget nodded and took Zero's hand. Zero went to grab his mask and put it on, much to Gadgets protest. "I don't want to show my face to the outside world, this mask protects my identity" Zero explained to Gadget. Gadget put on his clothing as Zero did and both of them teleported to the outside world.

- Mystic Jungle -

The jungle was alive at day, birds were chirping in the wind, the sun was coating the jungle in strong beams of heat, making it humid in a way, and wildlife sprouted from green leaves and bushes. Gadget looked around, it was quite a beautiful sight.

"We have to be weary, the Resistance could be lurking around waiting for us" Zero explained.

Gadget nodded, "Then let's get practising" he looked at his ruby, the ruby in turn glowed faintly. Zero took a defensive stance and he powered his own ruby, "Let's start with target practice, these cubes shall suffice for now" Zero spawned in over twenty red cubes around him. "Hit the cubes using your magic, hit me and you'll be hit back, so be careful" Zero warned.

"Now, the rule of magic is to think of what you want. If you don't think of what you want the magic to do then the magic won't work" Zero explained. "For starters, think of a spear, and hold up your hand at the direction of a cube, the magic shall do the rest"

Gadget gulped but nodded and thought of a regular spear. He aimed his hand at a red cube, nothing came. Until suddenly a red spear struck a cube and disintegrated after. Gadget gasped but smiled widely, "Woah! Did you see that?!" he held his hands up victoriously and grinned.

Zero smiled under his mask, "I did, now, keep practicing with the other cubes" he looked at the excited wolf.

"Okay!" Gadget smirked, determined to perfect his new magic.

It was after 10 minutes did Gadget disintegrate all the cubes around Zero. "Yeah! I did it!" he grinned proudly, unaware that magic has consequences when used too frequently and quickly. Gadget started to feel exhausted and was about to collapse only for Zero to catch him, "Magic always has side effects, one of them is exhaustion" Zero commented and teleported both of them to his underground base so Gadget could rest.

"It seems that the wolf has taken a different side" Shadow grunted and teleported off to report to the Resistance.

- Resistance HQ -

"How DARE he!" Knuckles shouted in aggravation.

"Could you really blame him, though?" Sonic commented. "If Infinite is keeping him hostage he could be using him against his will"

"So now we have double the threat" Silver sighed.

"Shadow, keep reporting on that site. Tomorrow, we ambush them" Knuckles spoke.

- Zero's Base -

Gadget was sleeping on their bed, Zero cuddled with him, he had taken his mask and clothing off.

Zero's thoughts didn't let him sleep though, he kept worrying about the Resistance and how Gadget has been divided, even though Gadget chose to stay with him it still concerned him, he didn't want Gadget to leave his side. White hair draped over the jackals face, he felt tired, yet couldn't sleep.

Eventually Zero passed out holding Gadget, the two slept the majority of the day after.
