Chapter Eight: Ambush!

"Let's go! Tails, have you got that lifeform detector?"

"Yes, it's ready!"

Zero woke after 6 hours rest, he felt around but couldn't feel Gadget next to him. He panicked and shot up, "Gadget?" he stood up and looked around. "Gadget?!" he shouted higher.

"In h-here!" a voice came from the living room, it sounded...off.

Zero ran to the living room and seen his lover on the ground, clutching his chest. He wrapped his arms around Gadget and pulled him to the closest sofa, "What happened? Are you in pain!?"

Gadget winced, "A little..." he looked at Zero. "I had woken up early and decided to-to give you rest, s-so as I walked to the living room I got this...constricting feeling in my chest" he whimpered.

"Okay, it's okay, just breathe" Zero squeezed Gadgets hand. "It may be just the ruby's side effects" Zero looked at Gadgets ruby; it was flickering. Zero's ruby glowed brightly as if responding to the cry of the other ruby.

Gadget closed his eyes and started to do the breathing exercises he learned when he was little.

Zero's ruby started to feed magic into the other, the process could be seen as tiny strands of red magic flowed from the larger ruby to the smaller ruby. Gadgets ruby then pulsed like a heartbeat, it absorbed the magic and the pain ceased inside Gadget.

The wolf breathed a sigh of relief as the pain died down, he finally opened his eyes and looked at the astonished jackal, "What?...what happened?" he asked. Zero was flabbergasted, "I...I don't know" he sat beside him and held his hand. "My ruby seemed to react to the your ruby's "pain" and fed some of my ruby's magic into your ruby" he explained. "And it seemed to have cured your chest pain" he finished, leaving a very confused wolf to think over his words.

"Oh...wow" Gadget chuckled and moved so he snuggled with Zero, pressing his muzzle into Zero's chest.

"Yeah, I don't know where your pain came from, it could be that your ruby wasn't fully filled with magic. Yes, you could use it but it seemed to drain quicker" Zero thought aloud. "I guess my ruby filled that place, hopefully that won't happen again"

"Hopefully" Gadget sighed and kissed Zero lovingly.

"Come on! We're close" Tails ran through the jungle as his newest invention - a lifeform detector, picked up two Mobians in the jungle.

Sonic ran ahead of Tails, since he was the fastest after all. Shadow, Rouge and Omega searched around the signal so whoever it was couldn't escape easily. The rest followed Sonic and Tails.

The detector suddenly sent off beeps as they were right on their targets. Tails stopped suddenly, causing Sonic to nearly trip as he skidded to a stop.

"Find it?" Sonic asked and looked around. "I don't see them" he shrugged.

Tails looked at his device, "They are here, they should be!"

A loud beeping rung through the underground base, interrupting the two lovers from their heated make out session on the sofa.

Zero groaned, "Gadget..." he mumbled through a kiss. Gadget whined, "Fineee.." he got off the jackal. Zero stood up, giving his disappointed lover a quick kiss, and walked off to see what sparked the alarm.

Gadget watched from the sofa, "What is it?" he asked.

"They're back, looking for us I presume" Zero replied and sighed. "It seems they've brought back up, the whole gang seems to be there" he explained.

"Oh, should we go up to them? Maybe give them a lesson to not interrupt us?" Gadget smirked devilishly.

Zero chuckled and walked up to his lover, holding up his chin, "Would you like that?" he smirked. Gadget nodded and stood up to kiss Zero, the jackal returned the kiss and pinned him to a wall. "A lesson sounds like a great idea" Zero licked his lovers claim mark that still showed, the mark consisted of two bite marks with a hickey over them.

Gadget moaned gently, "As much as I'd love to continue this, I want them out of our territory first" he tugged on Zeros long hair gently.

Zero nodded and kissed his cheek, "Then let's get ready"

Zero was finally ready; he wore his signature mask, shoes, gloves and scarf. Gadget was ready too; he wore his shoes, gloves, chest piece and of course his glasses.

"Come on, let's show them what we can do" Zero held Gadgets hand and teleported both of them to the upper ground.

"S-Sonic!" Tails shouted as Zero and Gadget appeared.

"I know. Tails, get back to a safe distance!" Sonic shouted back. Tails nodded and retreated to a tree where he contacted Shadow over the signal.

"Shadow, Infinite and the rookie have appeared at these coordinates, get over here ASAP" Tails sent Shadow the coordinates.

"On my way." Shadow responded. He motioned for Rouge and Omega to follow as he skated to the location.

Zero scowled, "You interrupted me and Gadgets time together" he hovered into the air. Gadget growled at the Resistance and also hovered in the air, both of their ruby's glowed together.

"Your time together?" Sonic raised an eye ridge. "Don't tell me you two got together" he rolled his eyes.

Gadget narrowed his eyes, "We did." he snarled, clenching his fist.

"Rookie, chill" Knuckles looked at Gadget. "We never meant any harm, come back to us!" he pleaded.

"No! I'm staying with him" Gadget stayed with Zero, making Zero smile inside his mask.

"You are at a los-" Zero got winded by an angry, edgy hedgy. Gadget growled and fired at Shadow, he managed to cut the hedgehog but nothing more as Shadow was quick on his feet.

Zero got back up and snarled, he sent a flurry of illusions to the group, the illusions were duplicates of the originals and started to attack them.

Gadget hovered low and helped his lover, "You okay?" he asked. Zero nodded, "I'll be fine, come on, let's go somewhere else while they're busy"

Zero managed to escape with Gadget, he teleported off to the high mountains where no Mobians lived.

"Where are we?" Gadget asked as he stopped using his ruby so he could walk without hovering. Zero took off his mask so he could breathe properly after being winded by his nemesis.

"The mountains, no one will find us here as no Mobians live here" Zero explained and looked around.

Gadget nodded in understanding, "Okay, so...what next?" he looked at the jackal. "Do you have a place here? Or are we gonna camp it out?"

Zero hummed, "I can create a small underground base, but it may take over a day to complete" he powered his ruby. "Can I trust you to hunt for food?" he turned to his lover.

"I can try.." Gadget gulped. "I've never hunted for live prey before but I'll give it a shot" he flashed a warm smile and a thumbs up. Zero nodded, "Then go, we can set up a fire later to cook the food" he turned and focused on constructing the base.

Gadget left to go into the woods nearby, he was quiet and tried to bring his wolf instincts to good use.

"I can do this, I can do this!" Gadget comforted himself as he stalked around the woods.

Suddenly, a huge brown bear appeared from the bushes and rose up, it roared and growled.

" I can't do this!"
