Chapter Sixteen: Waiting Game

With Zero in jail and Eggman escaping, the Resistance soon restored peace across the world. Shadow and Sonic - alongside the other Resistance members - agreed to spare Zero's family from any harm, and so, let them be. Zero's ruby was destroyed by the orders of the Resistance, leaving Zero with a ruby-shaped scar over his chest from the destruction of the jewel, this caused Zero great discomfort but nothing more.

Gadget felt the destruction and also felt discomfort, but he still possessed his ruby. His ruby and Zero's mask were the only things that Zero gave him so he could remember him when he was gone; and the only comfort Gadget got was from Zero's scent on their bed that still lingered for a while.

Aurora eventually learned to speak a few words, including both of her parent's names. Gadget decided to homeschool her as she grew up over the years because he feared that she would be picked on for being the daughter of Infinite. Gadget taught Aurora basic animals since she was still very young and she seemed to enjoy playing with her animal toys, but he also taught her how to walk as she was getting more confident on her feet. Since she was only around six months from what Gadget could piece together, Gadget did eventually try to search for her birth certificate but no matter where he searched or got advice from he couldn't precisely determine her age, so he decided to base her age off when he and Zero adopted her, since Gadget decided that she looked around three months when Zero found her.

It's been three months since then.

Zero had gotten along well with other criminals in prison, heck, he even made a few friends there. The food there was horrible but that's to be expected, and there was always someone trying to escape so Zero had some amusement while serving his sentence - but he missed his family.

Zero had not seen Gadget in a month since he decided to do monthly visits into the prison as the prison seemed to scare Aurora the first time they were there. It was lonely without his energetic wolf beside him, not to mention his adorable daughter. When they got the chance to meet, Gadget would always fill him in with how he and Aurora are doing and how she's growing so big, it always made Zero chuckle.

Right now, he was excited, because his family were due to visit him today and he couldn't wait.

A bell rang out and all prisoners who had visitors waiting for them were taken out of their cells and brought to the visitor room by the guards.

Gadget held Aurora close as she didn't like seeing the other criminals. He looked around, his heart pounding as he waited for his lover to enter the room.

As the black and white jackal entered the room he instantaneously spotted his red furred wolf from the many Mobians present. He grinned and walked to them, he was uncuffed during visitor time like all the other criminals here. Gadget gasped and stood up with Aurora, he immediately hugged his lover tightly, and Aurora hugged Zero's leg.

"Daddy!" Aurora beamed.

Gadget was the first to unleash the waterworks, Zero looked at him and wiped his tears, "Awwww, don't cry my love, I'm here" he kissed him lovingly, something he craved each month since physical contact was very limited. Gadget returned the kiss and stroked his cheek, "How are you?" Gadget asked as they sat down. Zero picked up Aurora and held her on his lap, "I'm keeping well, you two are the only reason I stay happy and keep my behaviour in top shape in this place" Zero chuckled and nuzzled his daughter.

Gadget chuckled, "Well that's good" he smiled. Zero smiled back at his lover, "How are you?" he asked.

"I'm doing well and have been kept busy by this little one" Gadget smirked as Aurora giggled. "Aurora has been learning and growing a lot since last we seen you, she can even say our names now" he smiled warmly.

"Oh, is that so?" Zero smirked. "Sweetie, can you say my name?" he smiled at his daughter. Aurora giggled more and played with Zeros nose, "Z..Zero!" she beamed.

This brought a tear to the jackals eye, "Oh my chaos..." he smiled proudly. "That's my little girl!" he hugged her.

Aurora hugged her father in return, Gadget was about to speak when he got interrupted by the timekeeper.

"Alright! Time's up!" The male hawk shouted.

Zero sighed, "Well, I must go" he stroked up and passed Aurora back to Gadget. Gadget frowned but quickly kissed Zero's cheek and held Aurora, "Alright then, I'll see you next month babe" he smirked softly.

"See you soon my two little wolfies" Zero waved softly and walked with a guard back to his cell.

Little did they know Zero would be out sooner than expected...
