Magnus hardly slept that night once he had snuck back into his room. He hadn't even changed out of his clothes before climbing into bed, and once the sun started to shine through the windows, he was rolling out of bed again. The others in his room were still asleep, Jeremy snoring loudly and Roger with a pillow over his face to block out the sun. Magnus chuckled, changing into a clean outfit before heading out.
Once he'd reached the Great Hall, he b-lined it towards the Gryffindor table where he saw Fred, George, and Lee. He sat beside George and they seemed very confused by the overt excitement on Magnus's face. "No, no, do keep us in the dark on whatever is making you grin so bad." Fred eyed Magnus, sharing the same expectant air as the other two.
"I found out what the first task is," Magnus's voice was so low he wondered if they would be able to hear him properly. They leaned in, George getting pushed even closer to Magnus by the other two. Leaning his own head in, wanting to keep anyone but his friends from hearing, "dragons. I saw 'em last night out in the forest."
"What?!" George hissed, each of them looking shocked at the news.
"It's not like we have to kill them or anything. Apparently it's just to get around them or something. A little weird, but I'm excited."
"Of course you are, anything that puts you in mortal peril gets you all giddy." Lee was shaking his head, but a smirk was visible. Fred seemed amused too, and George was the only one looking entirely and unabashedly worried.
"Are they sure you guys aren't going to die from these tasks?" He asked, brows furrowed to the point Magnus thought they were trying to merge together.
He laughed, shaking his head, "George, buddy, death is just a risk we gotta take. They have people on backup of course in case of troubles, but it is the Triwizard Tournament. Wasn't it you and Fred who were going to enter it against the rules anyway?" Magnus sat back up properly and started grabbing breakfast for himself.
"Well- that-" George couldn't come up with any rebuttal, and instead settled for looking quite grumpy and taking a huffy bite of toast. Fred and Lee looked at each other with smirks, holding back chuckled before they too went back to eating.
"So, do you have a plan on what you might do?" Lee asked, letting his voice go back to normal.
"Dunno, think I'm just gonna wing it. Can't really plan if I don't know the actual objective," Magnus took a large bite of egg, looking completely unfazed by the impending danger. He just didn't think about the audience he would have to perform in front of.
The rest of the day Magnus spent in an empty classroom on his own. Despite the confidence he kept showing off, he found himself shaken when he actually thought about what he'd do. He was sure he'd get out of there, alive at least. The question was how. He couldn't plan, so instead Magnus spent all day practicing spells. He'd brought with him many of his advanced books. At first his nerves made the spells wobbly or complete failures as he tried them, but slowly as he let his mind focus in on the magic rather than thinking about anything else, he managed to get better and better.
Monday wasn't much different. He didn't get to talk to Harry about the task, so instead he spent any free time he could practicing. Even in class Magnus had his wand in hand. At one point he accidently caused an unused chair in the back of a classroom to melt partly. No one noticed thankfully, but he still found it extremely embarrassing.
That evening, the twins managed to find Magnus in an empty classroom, having gone looking for him. "Mag!" He jumped as the two distracted him, and a loud boom sounded as a chair went flying into the wall opposite Magnus and nearly sent himself toppling over backwards. "Bloody hell!"
