When lunch comes by, I head down the hallway and straight into the library. As soon as the door opens, Mrs. Mills stops putting the books on the shelves. "Theo!" she calls out, heading up to me. "I'm glad you're here."
"Nice to hear that I'm welcome," I say, sitting down on her rolling chair. I start twirling around while she catches up to me, carrying her turquoise dress in her hands.
"I need you to look after the library while I am gone," she explains, catching up her breath. "I am really out of shape."
"Since the 80s," I whisper.
She starts laughing. "Let's see who will let you check out a book next time," she snaps after calming down.
"It was a joke!" I say, grinning at her.
"Anyway," she starts, "I have to attend a teacher's conference really quick—look after the library."
"Why don't you lock the room instead?" I ask, continuing to twirl on her chair.
She leans on her desk to open a drawer and pull out her flip phone. "I didn't think you would enjoy spending your lunch period on the wild out there," she says, referring to the cafeteria.
"Quick thinking," I reply, coming to a stop. "The last time I ate at the cafeteria, I met the not-so-holy Trinity."
"That's what I thought," Mrs. Mills adds. With her phone on hand, she begins to head out the door. "Oh, by the way, I left you a piece of brownie on the lowest drawer."
A smile spreads across my face and she notices it, winking at me as she closes the door behind her. As I search through her drawer, the door she came out from opens. By the time I find the brownie inside a Minnie Mouse lunchbox, Harvey stands on the other side of the desk.
"Hey!" I quickly say, putting the brownie down.
He glances at it. "Lunch of champions."
I grin. "Mrs. Mills left it for me," I say as if he ever asked where it came from.
"Nice of her to leave you a piece," he says, placing his arms on the desk to lean forward.
"It's not like she could eat all of it," I let him know.
He raises an eyebrow. "Diet?"
I shake my head, plopping a piece into my mouth. "Diabetes."
His eyes widen as he puffs his cheeks. "Right."
I raise the brownie. "Want some?"
"No, thanks," he says, waving his hand at me. "I'm good, Theo."
He looks around him for a second before heading to a table to bring a chair by my side. He places his chair close next to me that his shoulders are caressing mine. He is close enough that the scent of his cologne is persistent on the tip of my nose. As I look down at the chocolate bread, he is looking at me with his lips puttered.
"Sorry," he apologizes out of nowhere. "My ego was annoyingly high earlier—I shouldn't have said what I said about Oscar."
I finally look at him. "It's totally fine."
He nods his head. "Speaking of ego," he brings up, "want to know what would feed it?"
I shrug. "What?"
"If you came to my final game after school," he says, sparkling teeth twinkling at me as he smiles. "It's about time you come to see me play."
"Okay." I nod. "Would it be right after school?"
"An hour after school," he replies. "At five."
I run my tongue over my teeth, hoping that there is no chocolate covering them. "I'll be there, Harvey."
I have actually never been to any school game which is unusual considering the fact that I am a junior. By now, anyone has been to at least one game. Sadly, I have yet to find myself interested in any sport. However, this time I will be there to support Harvey so I don't mind attending the game this time.
There is an awkward silence around us that I can hear the chattering coming from the cafeteria.
"Theo," he murmurs.
I raise both eyebrows. "Hmm?"
His green eyes make it hard for me to make eye contact, similarly to when I was speaking to Oscar on the school parking lot. There is a shyness that comes along when I look at beautiful eyes for more than two seconds.
He never answers me, instead, he leans close to me slowly.
I am frozen in place, feeling a sudden heat rush to my cheeks. The closer he gets, the faster my heart thumps.
His lips come in contact with my cheek, soft and warm. He rests them there for a long time, as if savoring the touch of my skin on his lips. With that, he stands up and says, "I'll be expecting you there, Theo."
I smile at him, afraid that if I speak I might stutter.
He dives his hands in the pockets of his letterman and walks out the door. Now that he is gone, I bring a hand to my cheeks and feel the heat. All I hope so is that they are not red or he could have noticed how he makes me feel.
However, the thing is that I don't know how I truly feel? Do I genuinely like Harvey? What is it like to fall for someone? All I know is the outcome of whatever bonding we are having: I will break his heart and my books will receive the recognition it deserves.
