The following morning Tom, Y/N and Sonic had woken up early like they had planned. Their morning hadn't been as talkative as yesterday which surprised Tom who had also taken notice of the fact that Y/N and Sonic seemed somewhat tired. He immediately knew that the two of them had been up at some point during the night and thought it was somewhat weird but still felt like he shouldn't mention it to them.
After leaving from the motel the group had eaten breakfast at a small roadside diner which surprisingly made both Y/N and Sonic more talkative. Following that the group had continued on their journey to San Francisco and not too long ago had crossed from Oregon to California.
"Like I already told you, I really wanna see the world more. Go on all the different continents and visit at least one country in them you know. Just so I can say I've been to all of them. But really, I would love to visit every country that I can," Y/N explained to Sonic who had once again asked her about her bucket list. "Maybe someday I could travel further than that too," she added laughing. "But if I really had to just do just like you, so like, a bunch of things in under 24 hours, I mean, I wouldn't know what to do. I'm boring like that you know."
"You're not boring!" Sonic immediately protested causing her to scoff as Tom glanced the two interested in their conversation.
"Oh please, I've been doing what, taking pictures for the past few years and nothing else."
"You tried to solve a mystery. That's something," Sonic replied, and Y/N began to laugh. Sonic watched surprised as the girl stopped laughing and then turned to look out the window. As she stayed silent and didn't respond anything Sonic decided to try talking to Tom instead, "So, what's on your bucket list?"
"Who, me?" Tom asked surprised that Sonic had turned his attention to him.
"Yeah. Everyone has a bucket list, right?"
"Sure, but... I mean, you're the one leaving Earth, and... I'm not planning on dying anytime soon," Tom replied not knowing what to answer.
Sonic chuckled, "Don't be so sure. Your best friend is a magnet for danger."
"Are you anointing yourself as the bestie?"
"Mm-hmm," Sonic nodded.
"A little presumptuous, but..." Tom started but noticed Sonic's offended look, "I mean... What, no... I like you, of course, but, you know, we're not best friends."
"You tucked me in last night," Sonic replied, and Tom chuckled smiling. "Fine, fine, fine. Best animal friend."
"That would be my dog, Ozzy," Tom quickly corrected him.
"Okay, let's drop this increasingly humiliating topic of conversation. Bucket list. Give it to me!"
Tom thought for a moment and then glanced at Y/N. "Okay, there is one thing. In Green Hills, I've always felt... I don't know, more like a babysitter than a real cop, y'know?" he explained while taking glances to Sonic to see how he was reacting. "So, I want a chance to prove myself, under real pressure. I'm gonna move to San Francisco, become a street cop. And... I don't know, see if I have what it takes," he finished explaining and turned to Sonic who looked at him with disbelief. "What? Wh-Why is your face doing that?"
"You're leaving Green Hills?!" he asked raising his voice.
Tom wasn't expecting exactly that kind of reaction but could definitely see why he would react like he did. "Okay," he sighed thinking how to justify his decision.
"B-B-But why? Why would you leave Green Hills?" Sonic asked confused.
"This may be hard for you to understand, but Green Hills is a small town. It's a very small town," Tom replied.
