You looked over at Charles in victory, but instead of seeing him celebrating, you watched in slow-motion terror as debris from the explosions scattered, one piece lodging itself into Charles' lower back. You couldn't help the feeling of overwhelming despair as he leaped forward, clutching his fresh wound. As soon as he hit the ground, Erik removed the piece of metal, no bigger than a thumbnail, but the damage had already been done.
Once you caught up with time and your ears had popped, all you could hear was Charles' grunts and yelps of pain. It killed you to see him like this. For once, you desperately wished you were invisible, you wanted to run away, but there was nowhere to go. You started to regret inserting yourself into the lives of the people around you. I tried to warn you Charles. I want you by my side. We're brothers, you and I. All of us together, protecting each other. We want the same thing." Charles let out a pained chuckle "Oh, my friend. I'm sorry, but we do not." A long silence ensued as their words sank in, giving time for everyone to contemplate. The air was different, not quite hostile, but no longer unified.
