“Okay, and relax.”
Breathing hard, I sink to the floor in a squat. I didn’t think I could get out of breath as a vampire, but after a two mile run in the rain, I’ve been proved wrong. I’m exhausted. Since I stopped training, if even only for a few months, I’ve realised how unaccustomed I’ve become to the exertion. However, I am fairing much better than most of the Praetorians. Matt is sweating and his breathing is half gasp, half wheeze. Anya’s lilac hair curls damply around her ears, plastered to her forehead, and she is bent over with her hands on her knees.
“How are you not tired?” Matt rasps as I regain some energy and get to my feet, stretching out my back.
Years of training have left me fit and agile, and all of this exercise feels familiar. The vampires, I’ve noticed, get out of everything because they can’t go out in daylight. I’m almost beginning to wish I hadn’t said anything about being a daylighter; I could definitely have missed out on all this running.
“I…I used to train for self-defence.” I tell him. “So I’m used to all this.”
Rain runs in rivulets down my face, and I wipe them away. It’s a futile activity, as the moment I wipe the rain away, it is replaced by the elements. Matt puts an arm around Anya, both of whom are shivering in the cold. My vampirism means that I’m not feeling the cold, and I smile smugly as Matt and Anya shiver.
“Visualise your calm place, your happy place.”
A tall, lanky dude who is definitely a werewolf is sat crossed-legged on the floor , his hands on his knees, his eyes closed. The rest of us are in an identical position, opposite him. And, I note, the lights are low, so the vampires are here too.
“Visualise peace, harmony, weightlessness. You’re in your own personal bubble. No one can reach you. Everything is silent.”
I’m almost falling asleep visualising my “bubble”, my head to my chest, when someone taps me on the shoulder. I yell, jumping, my eyes flying open. “What the…”
Everyone twists round to look as I spin to see Indy behind me, waving apologetically. Someone giggles and I could die of embarrassment.
“Hey, Tom.” Indy says. “Sorry to interrupt. Can I borrow Alec for a sec?”
The werewolf – Tom – nods, and closes his eyes once again.
“Alright, quiet please. Close your eyes; now picture a clear, blue sky…”
I follow Indy from the room gladly, away from the sniggers, and out into the hallway.
“Hi, Alec. How are you doing? You settling in okay?” she asks, putting a hand on my shoulder.
“Sure, I’m fine.” I reply, honestly, gently nudging her hand from my shoulder.
“Okay, well, you have a visitor.” She tells me. “She’s waiting in my office.”
