Matt and Anya seem to have been prepped on my wanting to be alone. When we returned from Central Park last night I got into bed and stayed silent until I fell into a fitful sleep. This morning, I didn’t go to training, and no one has come to get me. So I don’t go.
I’m grateful to Matt and Anya, who woke up this morning and asked if I was alright and if I wanted anything, but without pressing me for information. I’ve made some pretty good friends in them.
I finally get up around twelve, and pull on some clean clothes. I hear the others go to lunch, but I’m not up to it yet. I reach the phone out of the bottom of my bag. I’m about to turn it off when I get a call. The caller ID tells me it’s Jace.
“Hello?” I ask, and the voice that replies is Izzy’s.
“Hey, Alec. I need to talk to you.” She says, straight to the point.
“Are you okay?” I ask, full of concern for my sister.
“Yes, yes, I’m fine. Shut up now, Alec, and listen. I need you to call Magnus.”
“What? Izzy, no. I have to go.” I lie.
“Don’t you dare hang up on me because you don’t want to talk about this!” she snaps, and I move my finger from the button to disconnect the call. “I know something happened yesterday.” She says. “Magnus came to the Insititute to see us. He’s worried sick about you. Worried because you hadn’t called in days, hadn’t come home in days, and then he finally sees you on some Praetor Lupus outing with a curse on you! How do you think that made him feel?!”
“I don’t know.” I whisper.
“Guilty! Like you’re lying to him. Like you don’t trust him!” she tells me, sounding angry. She huffs. “I’ll talk to you later, Alec. Call him. I love you.”
Then he hangs up.
That night, I wait until I can hear Matt and Anya’s muffled snores, then I pull my phone out. I burrow under the covers so the light doesn’t wake the others up. The screen is painfully bright in the darkness and I flinch as I read the time. 1:09. Time to face the music.
I edge the door open and pad down the hall to the bathroom, clutching my phone in my hand. I lock the door, sliding the bolt home firmly. Then I sit on the floor, my back against the door, and click call before I lose the courage.
After three rings, I’m losing hope. Then-
“Hello, Magnus Bane, High Warlock of Brooklyn. I’m waiting on a call so…”
I cut him off.
“It’s me.”
“Alexander?” he asks. “Are you there? What’s happening?”
