People are dispersing now. The night has come fast and the vampires are leaving under the cover of darkness. My hand hasn’t left Magnus’s all afternoon, almost scared to let him go now I finally have him back.

“Hey, Lightwood.”

I turn, seeing Raphael before me. Of all the people I’ve seen today, he looks the least injured.

“Hi.” I say.

“I think this is yours.” He says, sliding my Lightwood ring from his finger and tossing it to me.

I catch it in my left hand, the one that isn’t in Magnus’s, and push it onto my index finger with my thumb. Raphael took my ring as payment when he Turned me, and its return puzzles me.

“Thank you.” I say. “But why?”

“Well, you did save us.” He says grudgingly.

“Thank you.” I repeat. “And thank you for fighting with us.”

He nods. “I’ll see you, Lightwood.”

He glances to Magnus.

“See you, Magnus.” he says, and leaves, followed by a gaggle of loyal follower vampires.

“Did you want to stay here one more night? While you heal?” I ask Magnus, laying a hand gently over the bandages on his waist.

He immediately shakes his head. “No, I just want to go home.” He says, and I nod in agreement.

All I want now is to go home and smell the familiar scent of sandalwood and see the familiar sight of the apartment I’ve missed so much.

“Okay, let’s go.” I say and start to push the door open when a voice makes me stop.

“Alec! Wait!”

I turn to see Clary, limping after me, her ankle swollen and bandaged. Her face is pale with effort, but determined, her hair bright like flames against her pallor.

“Hey, are you okay?” I ask as she nears us.

“I’m fine. But I have something for you.”

My ring back, and now this. This day is turning out to be a whole lot better than expected.

“What is it?” I ask.

“Take off your shoes.” She orders.

I raise my eyebrows, shaking my head. “What?”
